Plane Identification
On Sunday, I found an old 4 1/2 plane at the market, but can't identify it. Can anyone here help?
the body has "No 4 1/2 " cast in the front and "MADE IN SHEFFIELD " cast into the back. The blade is marked " LESTA BRITISH MADE"
it predates any frog adjuster and has a keyhole lever cap.
some pics are located here.

Thanks in anticipation.
cheers Geoff.

I have not seen the lesta brand before but a few of the british planes aimed at the handyman came without the frog adjusting screw. That said they can still be set up to work well. The first plane I bought back in the 70tes was like that and did good work as my one and only plane for about 20 years. I still have it and it gets the odd run now and then. They were aimed at the lower end of the market but are still better than a modern stanley. The plane you have looks quite old in style and perhaps that brand never had a frog adjusting screw. Anyhow being from Sheffield it should be a reasonably good bet that it is well made.
Regards
John

Hi John, thanks for your thoughts. The quality of the castings is certainly up there. An indicator that it is perhaps a budget plane of its time is the lateral adjuster lever is made from folded steel rather than a solid casting . Cheers Geoff.
