Old Planer Blade Grinder
Found this knife grinder in a garage sale for about $50. It operates very smoothly and is fully automatic.
In looking at an old company brochure online, it appears the flat belt was wrapped about three times around the back pulley and the last was twisted 180 degrees. As the carriage traversed the v-rail to one side or the other, it tripped a lever which pushed a rod holding the belt, which slid the belt to the back pulley, reversing the direction and completing the cycle. Each time the carriage made a pass, a little lever turned a ratchet as it was deflected against the v-shaped part at the front. This turned a shaft just a few degrees, which turned a worm gear, pushing the adjustable angled platen closer to the grind wheel "half the thickness of a cigarette paper" according to the old brochure. It can be set to grind flat or hollow-ground blades. I haven't gotten a flat belt for it yet, but the motor runs very well.
It was made by the Dependable Machine Company based in North or South Carolina. I forget which.

Hi Matty,
Yes, That is where i found the brochure. Haven't found a manual yet, so, would have to install the belt according to the illustration on the brochure.
thanks

I think there are two separate belts. The lower pulleys would be two loose (idle) pulleys on the outer two sections and driven only on the middle pulley. The two belts would be pushed over and back together at the same time. That way the normally wrapped belt would start driving forward on the middle section, and the twisted belt would be running on an idle pulley.
Then when the two belts are moved over by one pulley, the twisted one will now drive the machine in reverse and the straight belt would be running on an idle pulley.
It would be cool if you could video some of the movement of the machine (grins hopefully).
Seeing your machine gave me visions of doing something with this grinder I picked up at a farm auction.
