Hi Matty, Hiroller and Rob,
I'm just finding my way round this site. I stumbled on it by accident while researching my grandfather's war service. I had no idea Syd had a fan club. I never met him. My father (Lee Sydney Barker) was his only child. Dad died last year. He would have loved knowing about this. Happy to meet up. I'll bring one or two of my brothers who may be more knowledgable regarding the woodworking side. Or may not. Don't be too hopeful. How do we go about exchanging private email addresses?

This story is getting more and more interesting. To get together with Elizabeth and get "the family angle" will add a very significant part to the history of the Barker Company. I have been using my LS Barker Jointer a bit of late planing some very hard Hardwood and thinking how easily the machine handled it. The simplicity of design plus the heavy construction is a combination that works so well.
Just do it!
Kind regards Rod

You are a New Member and your user name is in red because of that . I forget how many posts you have to do before that changes but from memory there are some restrictions because of that. I don't know if some of the restrictions are to do with private messaging or posting pictures or what? Ill have to find the list here somewhere .
If your click on someone else's user name it gives an option of private messaging . There is also a Brown Bar up near the top of each page with a link to private messages .
Ill leave the meeting or talk of it up to Matty Who started this thread and is so keen on your Grand Father's Machine business as his user name shows .
Plenty of us are to far away to meet but would love any info you have, and the real Gold, which is any pictures that you or your family may have of the workshop inside or outside to go along with any info you have . We will help explain how to load them on here . Or if you need help doing that then I'm happy to talk it through over the phone if its not working out .
I have a yet to be used LS Barker 36" wheel Band saw which I will get running again one day . So much of the machinery keeps showing up so there will be a lot of interest over this and into the future as well . There is another thread on here about another Melbourne machinery maker, Sparrow Engineering, where a relative came in late by searching her relations name and added amazing pictures and info. What a surprise that was .
It happened here and got more interesting on page 5
Woodworking Machinery in Australia - Manufacturers and Merchants
This sort of thing makes a great story a lot better so thanks Elizabeth.

Hi Rob. I'm sitting talking to Mum and we are both excited but sad that Dad isn't around to know about this. He took over LS Barker and moved it to Heidelburg. He was Lee Sydney Barker. My preference would be for Matty to come around for a cuppa with Mum and I. We can give him what info we have and contacts for further investigation. Could you let him know I'd welcome his contact details? Thanks for all your enthusiasm. It's been wonderful especially for Mum.

Hi Elizabeth . That's nice to know that you have discovered us here and that it will bring You and your Mum some Joy. I was doing the same with my Mum on Saturday talking about my Dad, so I understand the sadness too. Its awful .
That's great thanks.
I probably don't have to let him know but I will check later on .
He's probably working somewhere checking his phone with this thread Id say .
The other blokes he's working with will be wondering what he's so exited about .
