    Default Richardson drill press parts

    G'day all

i recently purchased a big old Richardson drill pres.
solid as a rock and heavy as 2.
only issue is a few broken teeth on the quill rack, for want of a better term.
does anyone know of anyone selling a spare, or anyone on the forum clever enough to make one.
    image shows broken section.

    cheers

Jbarch, have you put any thought into welding a piece back in and grinding the notches back in to the piece ?

Depending on how much quill travel you need (and how much is available), a temporary fix might be to make up a collar to stop the quill retracting all the way. With that said, Matty's idea sounds like a great solution.

    Default Richo bits.

I flogged one of these to a mate a few years back, he already had one and was going to make one really good one from the two.
I'll give him a shout and see if he can help.

    Default broken quill

I'd love to weld a piece in but its not my thing - enough time trying to improve my wood working skills!

2 cable ties are forming a collar of sorts at the moment, and it still has nearly 100mm travel, so it is not a desperate fix ....but it seems he's worth spending some effort on.

thanks for the offer to follow up your mate clear out.

    Looks like a nice drill.
I could make you one but I don't think you would want to know what it would cost.
It looks like it is only missing one tooth, so maybe as has been said, restrict the movement with a thicker collar.
If you get in there with a die grinder and clean up the casting you wont even see it.
In case i'm wrong and the rack goes all the way to the bottom, I'd try and find one second hand.

    Cheers
    Andrew

Would brazing be better than welding? I am assuming less heat involved.

It will come apart somewhat ... surely wouldn't cost the earth for a shop to patch it for you, even if you then did the cleanup and made the new teeth.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Default Chas Skinner

    thanks for the tips all.
i managed to speak to Chas Skinner, he is in the process of relocating his business to Cooma.
    nice bloke and very knowledgable.

unfortunately he sold off most of his spares 6 months ago, but gave good advice about repairing the Richardson, which he suggested was a bit of top shelf gear.

didnt have a lot of nice things to say about machinery coming out of Taiwan and China though.........

Nice to hear that you were able to track Chas down, and that he is just relocating...he has an awful lot of experience with old Australian woodwork equipment. He was definitely the "go to" guy for parts.

Hey Buddy, I'm new on here and am looking for parts for a Richardson and I saw your old post. I can make a new spindle for you. Do you know anybody with parts?
