Default Sargent 1085 as a user

    Hi,
One of these combination planes had come onto my radar and it looks really nice.
Has anyone used one and could compare it to say, a Stanley 50 for ease of use and results? I have a Record 050 and Stanley 13-050. If it is a good user, I would most likely sell the Record to help raise the capital!
I am really interested in it not just to use but from an aesthetics point of view as well. I may not be able to afford it but wanted to know more about what it is like to use from you who may have used it.
    Any comments appreciated

I have a 1080 with a full set of cutters and the original wooden box.
It's a really nice combo plane and works as well as any of the others. I think it is comparable to a Stanley 45 and I think you can use 45 blades in the Sargent. Not 100% certain on that though.
    How much are they asking?

    Edited: Its a 1080 not an 1085.
The 1085 is the Stanley 55 equivalent.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Click Sargent planes by number scroll down to 1080

post 1949 they say they are an exact copy of a Stanley 45

He isn't sure, coming back to me in a few weeks but sounds like it is all there.
I will wait for photos etc before making an offer...
    There are two 1080's on eBay at the moment for around $325. I can't see any others, they are as rare as hens teeth, which makes me think;
    A. They were good planes as either got used or passed down and are to good to sell or
    B. There were never many of them made
Good to hear they are good users too, that is my interest but nice to use something a little unusual

I think it's more of a case of not many were brought into Aus rather than not many made. I have a few other Sargent planes and I like them because they are that little bit unusual.
    Here's mine, I think I paid less than $200.

That makes sense I guess, they were principally set up to rival Stanley in the US weren't they?
That is in great shape, in the original box too!
Does it take a lot of adjusting to get the cuts you want?

No, it's pretty simple. The blade you select and the fence position dictate the width of cut and the depth stop looks after the final depth. The weight of the cut is adjustable with the threaded blade holder (I may have just made that part name up ) Super sharp blades are a must. I have to admit, I have a Stanley 46 which I prefer to use but it has a skewed blade and makes curly shavings.

OK I just looked it up. It's called the Positive Up and Down Adjustment Knob. If you do purchase one I have the instructions for the 1080 and 1085. Complete with a list of the originally supplied cutters.

Thanks for the link, that is excellent, just checked it out and that is similar to the one coming here. It has 53 cutters so i guess that is 1942-44 model. I wonder if the sargent underwent the same wartime effects as Stanley. I would assume so...
this looks like it might be a goer - we are just going through terms etc, I will try and post pictures when it arrives with an update of cost etc.
It looks excellent and complete with wooden box and original instructions but i offered more than $200!

Sounds about right to me. As long as you are happy with the deal, that's all that really matters.
You will post plenty of pics when it arrives wont you?

Yep, stay tuned. Finding the right price was hard and I am not even sure I have. I don't want to rip the seller off nor get too carried away but the price of these are all over the place.
Anyway, it looks good so far and pictures will be posted if it all works out

Deal complete and I am pretty happy with it. Thanks Ben, really appreciate everything you did here.
Spent some time repairing the box but the leather handle is in tip top shape.
I know, I know it isn't a Stanley 55 but it will do for me.
It is almost complete with original instructions, long and short arms and 53 cutters. The only one it is missing is the slitter cutter, #25. If you know of anyone with one, please pass on my details as I am interested in completing the package but I think these will be unlikely to find...
Anyway, I am sharpening this up and getting ready to use it....kuploadfromtaptalk1435923512102.jpguploadfromtaptalk1435923557657.jpguploadfromtaptalk1435923597571.jpguploadfromtaptalk1435923674880.jpguploadfromtaptalk1435923721400.jpg
