    Question Stanley #45 Box Question

Does anyone here have the dimensions of the wooden box that the Stanley 45 sometimes came in?

I am looking to build one to store mine in, and would prefer to match the original as much as I can.

    Thanks!

Great question Craig, I am looking to do the exact same thing. I've looked around and found some pics but don't know how the inside of the box looks.

Depending on the vintage of the plane, the older type wood box with the sliding lid might be a better choice.

    Default Thanks!

The vintage of the plane isn't an issue for me, so I'm happy to use either the sliding lid or the hinged lid - I'll take what I can get

My plane isn't an original Stanley 45, it's a Montgomery Ward, and never came in a wooden box. My plan is to build a decent looking wooden box to store it in, while preserving the original cardboard box for some lucky collector - if I ever need to sell the plane.

    Vann,

Thanks very much for the photos! I never knew how the plane fitted into the wooden boxes.

Well I don't have a wooden Stanley box, but if it will help, here are the dimensions of the cardboard Stanley 45 box that I have:
    Length 300mm
    Width 180mm
    Height 125mm

These are the outside dimensions and the cardboard is around 1/8 inch thick.

The INTERNAL dimensions of the box of my Record 45 are

290mm long, 130mm wide, 130mm deep with the lid a further 15mm deep.

The plane is a tight fit and all the bits and pieces have to be put in carefully - a place for everything and everything in its place.

    Hope that helps

I have the twin of the third picture in front of me now.
    Outside dimensions.
    Length 308mm
    width 148mm
    height 155mm
The wall thickness is about 13mm, 1/2 inch I guess.
The lid is 1/4 inch thick, the base is the same thickness as the top it is simply nailed on the bottom.
If you would like some close-up pictures I can do that later today.

    Regards,
    Peter

    Default Timber

I realise that it isn't the same as the original, but today I drove out to a friend's place at Yass and picked up a heap of 100 year old cedar weatherboards, some of which I intend to recycle for this project.

I am really excited about this project

Default Stanley 45 Box On eBay

I found this old listing which has some pictures and a description.

Shown is a Type 8 to 9 STANLEY No. 45 COMBINATION PLANE BOX (1907-1909). This Chestnut finger jointed box is in mint condition, and measures 6-1/4" high x 5-3/4" wide x 12" long. It has a full facsimile label of the original. Top is probably user made, and fits snugly. Inside bottom is leather lined (not original). A very nice early Stanley No.45 Combination Plane box for your Type 8-9 No.45. Please see pictures, and thanks for LOOKING friends...

Just for a bit of variety, here's how Sargent do their version of the #45, the 1080.

    Default Neat!

That is a neat little set up! Thanks very much for posting that

I am trying to find some good pictures of Clifton's boxes for comparison as well. I'll keep looking.

I've found a couple so far.
