Default Stanley 51/52 chute plane and board. Question re frog mounting screws.

May I ask for some advice, please? I’m restoring a Stanley 51/52 combination. Just replacing some oddball screws etc - the plane and shoot board are in quite good condition.

    Three questions if I may:

    1. The frog mounting screws are 7/32 20RH according to the diagram below. I don’t want to make any assumption about what the thread standard is here - can anyone enlighten me?

    2. I’ve only just started scouring the Net for replacements - but just in case, does anyone have any suggestions as to any particularly good sources? Here’s a picture of the screws: (this is not my frog):

Old screws/ bolts are preferable, but almost anything would be better than the mismatched pair that are in there right now. One is a zinc plated Phillips head…EEK!

    3. As is common the hold down was missing. I managed to locate a repro casting which is OK but I’m hoping someone might be able to tell me what size the original bolt was. I imagine it was something like a dome head coach bolt with a wing nut but if anyone has more detail I’d be very grateful.

It’s likely that I’ll use the board but store the plane.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

    Best regards,

    Brian

Link to my restoration (2007): Restoring a Stanley #51/52

Mostly now used with a LN #51 (the Stanley #51 was retired as the frog is fragile) ...

I’m pretty sure the US Bailey bench planes used 7/32” 20tpi screws for holding their frogs as well, so track down a junk one for parts. The handle on 4-1/2’s upwards also had a dome headed screw of that size. US threads were almost always 60 degree thread angle so avoid English Stanleys; they’re more than likely to have used a 55 degree Whitworth threadform.

    Derek,

Thanks for the link to your website description of your 51/52 restoration. I confess I have read this many times over the past couple of years and it has been invaluable. The hold down that I got from the US is this one:

I’ll check the dimensions tomorrow. Thanks, too, for the pic of the hold-down bolt. I should have remembered that was in your restoration description.

Chief Tiff - thanks for the very helpful information on the 7/32 20RH screws. That gives me heart that I might not be searching for the impossible (grin).

Thanks again for your advice, gents. It is very much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    Brian
