Thread: Stanley No 80 cabinet scraper-is this a copy

Yes; it’s a copy. Stanley only ever made the 80 out of cast iron.

However the 80 is a very simple scraper to make properly. Providing that the threads aren’t sloppy, the blade bending screw was drilled straight and central, the blade clamp isn’t distorting anything and the bronze doesn’t leave marks on the timber I see no reason why your copy won’t perform as good as a genuine one.

Not a copy if it is made of cast iron.

Someone has gone to a LOT of effort to copy an original 80. Asides from the holes in the handles not there, but you can see where they're supposed to be.
The screws are straight and not sloppy. The base is pretty flat, and will only need a light flattening. The throat is clean and parallel.
A cleanup of the light rust and sharpen of the blade, should be good to go.

Why would anyone go to the trouble of casting one with the Stanley logo into it. I know that Stanley made more than one version of this tool as I have one that does not have the screw in it to bend the blade but it does have the supplementary phenolic base held on by screws so it can be replaced and yours does not have the screw holes for that.

Years ago when I owed a cabinet factory next door to a non-ferrous foundry I asked them if they could cast me an extra one.

They said "no problem, we can use one as a pattern" so I got one made of bronze complete with all markings just very slightly smaller.

Is that a Stanley 81? The phenolic base threw me as the 81 had a supplimentary wooden base; could yours have been replaced with plastic?

It might have been, it certainly isn't wood.
