Stanley No 80 cabinet scraper-is this a copy
As per the title. I picked this up recently and am wondering if it is a copy.
My limited research cannot find any Stanley No 80 in anything but steel.
Can anyone enlighten me.
Thanks

Yes; it’s a copy. Stanley only ever made the 80 out of cast iron.
However the 80 is a very simple scraper to make properly. Providing that the threads aren’t sloppy, the blade bending screw was drilled straight and central, the blade clamp isn’t distorting anything and the bronze doesn’t leave marks on the timber I see no reason why your copy won’t perform as good as a genuine one.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Not a copy if it is made of cast iron.

So a copy it is then. So probably paid too much.... Caveat Emptor
Someone has gone to a LOT of effort to copy an original 80. Asides from the holes in the handles not there, but you can see where they're supposed to be.
The screws are straight and not sloppy. The base is pretty flat, and will only need a light flattening. The throat is clean and parallel.
A cleanup of the light rust and sharpen of the blade, should be good to go.
Thanks for the replies.

Why would anyone go to the trouble of casting one with the Stanley logo into it. I know that Stanley made more than one version of this tool as I have one that does not have the screw in it to bend the blade but it does have the supplementary phenolic base held on by screws so it can be replaced and yours does not have the screw holes for that.

It might have been, it certainly isn't wood.

Patrick Leach, of the U.S.A., did a long essay with photos on Stanley's planes and related tools. Here's what he says (with picture) about the No. 81: The Superior Works: Stanley Blood and Gore Planes #71 - #87 I have both an 80 and an 81, and they're cousins but not identical.
There are also the very different looking scrapers in the 12-and-fractions-thereof series: The Superior Works - Patrick's Blood & Gore: Planes #12 -
