Default Stanley Rule & Level No. 73 Spokeshave

    Hi,

I have a question concerning an advertisement for a Stanley no. 73 spokeshave. (see below)

I found this ad while browsing the web some time ago. In describing the tool they say it is "extremely rare" and the asking price for it was US$465. Does anyone know if it is indeed so rare and if the price is justifiable?

The spokeshave advertised must have sold because it doesn't show up on their website any more, but luckily I saved the ad as an image. I'm asking this question out of curiosity because I have owned a Stanley No. 73 spokeshave, (same as the one pictured) for many years. I know it certainly is a great spokeshave and is a dream to use.

It says 11" and 'wider of the two cast-iron versions' ... so how long is yours?

(If it's not a personal question)

    Cheers,
    Paul

This site is coming up with some warnings, but you could find an email address ... Peter Robinson's Galoot Pages

This is what the screen looks like before my checker blanks it ...

here's a post from 2002 asking $225 in 2002 in the US, so there's something about 'em ...

    Hi Paul,

My No. 73 has been in use over the years so some of the Black Japaning has worn off in places, but that is the only difference. It is the same length as the one advertised, 11" long with 21/2" cutter.

I was able to get onto the Peter Robinson website but it doesn't give much info. It does list the No.73 but with a 2" cutter so it is the smaller one I guess. No price given on that Peter Robinson website.

Thanks for the link to the Old Tools website message. It seems the No. 73 spokeshaves must be indeed fairly rare if they command these kind of prices.

    Thanks for the reply,
    Cheers,
