Default Anyone want to talk David Stanley Auctions UK?

Been thinking of trying to grab a box or two of moulding planes from them and was wondering what you've found when you've won anything. Post covid please. Anything prior isn't really going to reflect costs anymore.

So is the auction site like the secret (the secret that everyone knows) stash of tools no one in the know is supposed to talk about?

No. I just think if you asked here on forum “ How many of you have bought anything at a DS auction in the past? “
You’d be lucky to get 3 people saying yes .
5 years ago you may have got a few more.
To ask if anything has been bought since Covid . I don’t see many people here buying quality vintage stuff and showing it off here. Unless it’s eBay here in AU or garage sale and cheaper than it’s really worth.
DS is good quality and pricey and + on top for other costs.
UK eBay I think would be better possibly cheaper for a set of or box of moulding planes.

What sort of moulding planes are you after anyway? Ones to hang on the wall? Users ? Just any moulding planes or cabinet making specific planes?

Things have changed in the last 30 years. Second hand Saws at markets were always cheaper than a meat pie. Moulding planes and wooden planes quite often didn’t even get taken to tool sales for lack of interest in the buyers. It was a good time to be buying . I did plenty.

Ya see, that's where I disagree. When you look at the realised prices, they're still quite cheap. I.e. Latest auction realised price for a box of 58 moulding planes was 210aud. Add onto that 100aud for shipping... You've still only paid upwards of $5.50 for each plane. Now say you only want ten out of that box... You off load the rest at $10 to $15 here. That's at least half of what the muppets on gumtree and marketplace are demanding for moulding planes that are junk, with splitting, the boxing is falling out and the blade is so pitted it needs to be tossed, and they won't budge. There was another box of 52 that went for less than $100...

I just bought a bedrock 604, cost me 350 here (didn't want to wait as I wanted to use it now). Same planes are getting hammer prices of $170aud, add on $100 for shipping and you're still $80 less than what's offered here.

Norris planes in average condition going for on average $250AUD, again add on $100 for shipping and you're still way under the starting prices of over $400 here...

Saws. They're damn near giving them away by comparison to what people demand for a single badly rust caked and pitted broken handled saw here.

I'm definitely going to give it a go. I know the tool shops watch the auctions like a hawk...

Also: I've recently had a chat with the auction house about shipping and they seem quite willing to work with me to keep the shipping costs down, so I think it's well worth the gamble and see how it goes.

It is worth giving it a go. Got a link to the lot in the sale?
What were the moulding planes though. All joiners types ? Any Rounds and Hollows?
The most used ones for bench work that come in handy I find are Rounds and hollows. A few rebates. The smaller side beads are great time savers and fast users. From 1/8 to 3/8". And specific cabinet moulders like OG in the smaller sizes are nice. Specially cabinet pitch higher angle stuff.

Ya!! Add $200 for shipping so the half set is 1250AUD. HNT Gordons are gonna be $3100. Tried to find a set offered in aus ebay and there's nothing, not even in the completed items...

And!! You can get a user condition set for a lot cheaper than that.

The boxes are always a mixed bag of British style moulding planes: rebates, tongue and groove, maybe the odd side rebate plane or snipe bill, plenty of side beads, and always a smattering of hollows and rounds, sash planes. You won't find any complex moulders, or matched pairs, always odds and sods.

These boxes are cobbled together by tool buyers who want to quickly off load stock they can't sell to tool dealers in North America and other places like here.

The tool shops here are tapped into buyers in the UK that scour the country for tools.

Car boot sales are open slather. I was buying boxes of planes for $20, 10 saws for $20... Chisels like Bergs for $5... Carving chisels like Addis for $10 each... I bought a full set of hollows and rounds for about $180. And nothing like here, where the rust is beyond repair (it's like sellers on market place and gumtree here charge more for the rust!!), they were at worst light rust and no pitting.

Default Looks like the late March auction is going to be good

Just a heads up to y'all. I had a peruse through the late March offerings - looks tasty.
