Tema T4 Vintage Smoothing Plane information wanted
A neighbour’s friend has this English made TEMA T4 smoothing plane that he is seeking information about. The branding on the rear timber handle is Preston. There was one auctioned in the UK on EBay, but the Worthpoint website requires viewers to pay to access auction prices.
I am hoping a forum member who collects these planes or knows a bit about them may be able to tell me the age and current value of this plane and any other history about Tema planes. It would appear that not too many have made their way to Australia. A friend mentioned the brand may be connected to the Wilson Lovett company.
Thanks

Hi Ben,
I have one same as 2nd photo with blind hole in the front knob and Preston on the lever cap. They have used nice rosewood in their handles.
Regards,
Ross

Hi Ben,
I don't know how to copy a link but if you google ( Preston hand plane reviews u.k. )you will get a bit of history. From what I could find on Tema they were a company in Wolverhampton who sold spirit levels, spokeshaves and other hand tools but I couldn't find any mention of planes.
Regards,
Ross

My guess for age would be 1930s (pre war) as once the war hit it was very difficult for companies - even those larger companies such as CJ Hampton (Record) to get rosewood in England. After the depression and war if the companies survived, generally Record went to stained hardwood, though no doubt there could be exceptions, but doubt this company (Tema) was much different. Preston made planes like that rather than the more traditional style they had been making to try keep up with what was 'modern' in terms of hand planes at the time.
