Unusual chisels
I found these chisels at my local Vinnies store, and am wondering if anyone can give me a clue as to their use. They are not a matched set, as there are several makers, including Alex Mathieson of Glasgow and Cox and Luckman. I thought they might be mortise chisels with the handles missing, but this seems not feasible because the makers names are stamped into the tang, where they would be covered if handles were fitted. also, the chisels are numbered at the top end of the tang area. Some have seen hammering on the top of the tang, but only to a very limited degree, so I am sure this is not part of their normal use. The 'hook' area of the tang also has some hammering on the underside in a few examples. There is a uniform taper from the tip to the tang in each chisel, and the sides of the blades are tapered inward towards the top. Each chisel has a groove along the top, running from the tip back to the start of the tang. Any information gratefully received.

P.S. Please excuse the lousy photos.. I had more trouble than enough trying to re-size them, and some reduced to postage stamp size despite my wishes.

Not Chisels.
Hi mspil,
Well they certainly were a good pickup, & appear to be in good condition. Now all you need are the Planes to go with them.
They are a set of Blades that come from a set of Wooden Planes, that do contours on wood, say around a window, architraves, tongue & grove, etc.
Or if you don't need them, there is bound to be someone on the Forums in need of them.Regards,
issatree.

I have never seen them before, my first guess was a selection of plane irons.

They are irons for a plough plane.

There are 8 to a set, numbered 1-8, representng an increase in size by 1/16",

Thanks to all who have responded, and added to my very deficient education. In particular to Derek, with his links to illustrate the use of the irons, and the range of sizes. My set has 10 in total. Some are numbered, others are not. It appears I have a full set, and an extra No 3 and No 6. All I need now is a plane to go with them. OTOH, they may finish up on market place.
Regards, Mike.
