In my case one can blame BobL (well that is my excuse) Let me explain.

Well I have been blamed for a number of things but this one is a new one.

I have only just read through this thread.

Although I'm a fan of old machines and agree with the basic premise that if you can then reusing an old machine may make economical and environmental sense, I am sort of glad that not everyone does this because there are simply not enough old machines around. If everyone was to buy old machines the price for them would be driven up so high that few folks could afford them. Many old machines are also 3 phase - this puts a lot of buyers off - this is good for me because I can then pick up used 3 phase motors for small bickies.

There are also many reasons why old machines don't suit some people
    1) Most DIY woodworkers are product not processed focussed - they actually have limited interest in machines and what they really want is the end product - the bookshelf or the coffee table. Most old machines need some attention and most DIYs will not tolerate even a slightest fix up
    2) Not many DIY woodworkers would even have the machine skills needed to maintain old machines.
    3) Some old machines would not meet basic OHS standards so cannot be used in some situations without modification.

Bob you are far enough away that we can put a lot of blame with your name on it and no-one will even flinch.

I am not sorry that I have gone down the Alaskan Mill then Jointer and Thicknesser then the SCM Panel Saw Then the.........Route. It not only is a lot of fun but using the timber that would otherwise be burnt we can turn out projects that are somewhat unique.
But I do like old machinery. Once we were coming out of Sydney and pulled up at traffic lights at the bottom of a long hill at Ryde. The truck that pulled up next to us was a single axle semi. The truck was a Dodge, I rolled down my window just as he let rip to climb the hill.....he had a Detroit in it and didn't he give it some.....music to my ears while my wife was screaming at me to wind the window up.

The 60 series Landcruiser that we have had for 25 years got a new coat of paint and a tidy up last year and when we took it to Brissy for the Wood Show we got 25MPG!!! Not bad for a 30year old motor that has done 417000 kms. The only work done on the motor was glow plugs and oil changes. The radiator has been overhauled 3 times and new bearings in the transfer case twice. So I am a happy camper.

I also have a l-o-n-g term project on the go.....1942 Jeep. Its in a lot of pieces but one day...
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod
