VISE: A small one and a big one
Hi Folks,
This post is regarding two vises I have - to promote discussion on old machinist vises. Often a tool that gets overlooked in the cast and class of tools, yet so essential to everyday work, and indeed, the restoration of other tools. I'd love to read about any knowledge of history, folklore or background stories of either model and brands my vises. I'd also love to see any vises you are fond of and why. Show us a big one, show us a small one.
Now, the first small vise is a number 023 1/2 made by A.M&F Co Athol Mass. The Athol company, as many of you are aware, later merged with Starrett.
The second vise is my joy. Yes, a beautiful Charles Parker No. 87.
Both vises have a 3.5inch wide jaw, yet considerably different in size.
Let me know your thoughts, folks.
Regards,
Raymond J.B
P.s If anyone has a Wilton bullet vise here in Aus, show all of us!

Both lovely vises you have. How did you come by them? Most of the old vises you find in Aust seem to be Dawns, the earlier ones have the same doorknob end to the screw, more modern ones getting the rectangular end. .
I think the rest of your machines deserve a bit of show and tell also, the scroll saw, lathe, and drill press.…..Live a Quiet Life & Work with your Hands

Yeah it's very hard to come by any vises in Australia that aren't Dawn or Record. And don't get me wrong, both brands are good vises, but I do have a soft spot for Chas Parker, Athol and Wilton.
I managed to find the Parker on eBay and the Athol through Jim Bode tools.
And for those of you that are perhaps chasing a Parker vise, have a look at the following link. This fellow has a fairly good record of the different models:
