Name: The 'Bandosawrus'
Description: This Bandsaw is without a doubt the pride of the collection and the centrepiece of the workshop. It is used as a daily machine like any other bandsaw. Purchased in 1998 as an inoperable wreck, then restored over the course of a year. It needed everything worked on, machining the shafts and bores, new bronze bushes, re-rubber the wheels, new paint after taking off the old gunk, new oilers and many other parts made or repaired to bring the machine to a usable state. But at the same time preserving the historical accuracy of such a piece ruled decisions with this process. The wheels are 2 feet diameter, the frame is a hollow box casting and the whole machine weighs approximately 750KG!!! Guards have of course been fitted and were removed for the photos. The machine performs extremely well, is reliable and loves to work very hard, especially when re-sawing up to 13" deep. It is believed to have been brought to Australia either as new or fairly close to it. I believe the machine was made as early as 1871, this is estimated from a patent date which was for the spring tension mechanism. As little is known about this machine's history of previous owners and it's maker, if someone may have any information on this machine or other machines made by the same manufacturer could you please contact Chris Vesper. The only markings on the machine is "Western & Co, Derby & London, Patent". Any information would be gratefully received.
