    Default Woodworking Job advice!!!

    Hey

I'm looking for a job in woodworking, possibly an apprenticeship. I'm not sure if I wont to pursue it as a career, but it's definitely something I want to try out. If anyone can give me feedback that would be great. I live brisbane. So if anyone knows of any jobs avaliable please let me know. I'm a hard worker, honest, reliable and easy going.

Has anyone had any experience with employment agencies aswell? Is it something worth looking into?

    Thanks, Chris

    Chris

I'm currently finishing a TAFE couse in NSW.
the course I started is now offered in two forms,
one intended for the kitchen industry, the other for furniture makers

the TAFE teachers recon most of the industry, at least in Sydney, is focused around making kitchens from chipboard or veneered MDF

my observation is that if your interest primarily lies in working with solid wood, you might need to "apprentice" or "intern" with a custom furniture maker

    Hey Ian

Yeah custom furniture making was what I was considering. I asked several people about it awhile ago and most people thought it was a difficult area to get into. I might see whats around in brisbane. If not I think I'll give cabinet making ago.

What type of work do you usually do? Hows it pay aswell?

    Thanks, Chris

    Chris

my day job is a long way removed from woodworking

as to getting into custom furniture making
one or two are lucky enough to apprentice each with year with one of the few volume custom makers -- for this it seems TAFE teachers are used as talent scouts

others find their way into the industry after several years building skills in the home shed

however, I suspect the majority enter the custom industry via one of the Degree or Certificate IV programs
