$1000 piece of glass!
Hey guys
I made this grandfather clock a few years ago, but still havent put the glass in the main case (or even bought it) I like the clasic look of beveled glass, but due to the odd shape a made the door, the glass will cost approx $1000o and has to come from sydney. because of this i keep putting off getting it. has anyone got any design ideas for the panel? i have thought bout leadlight etc, but can't find a design i like('
Thanks, peace out

Hey There,
My sister does Leadlighting and there isn't any set designs, you design what you want, I would suggest that less is more, as you don't want the glass overtaking that excellent clock.

A definite 'no' to coloured leadlighting if that's what you had in mind. How about non-bevelled? perhaps the bevelling is the big cost?

Hey Graham,
I wasn't saying use colors, I thought that a couple of pieces shaped to fit into the fancy shape, of the opening. I have seen my sister do some fancy jobs, but I reckon that the shape of the opening would test even the bestest professional glass shape maker.

Hey to you Meuls69 and greetings.
Wow what a beaut clock.
I love beveled glass in old clocks as well but you could put a rectangle piece into a rebate
inside that door and it would look great. The style of the clock is very majestic. You certainly have done a great job mate, full marks!
Regards, Captain

Thanks fr the ideas, You are right, the bevelle is the reason for the crazy price, and the guys in sydney are the only people i have found that would be able to do it. I have thout of the lead light using plain glass with the copperfoil of similar to do the joins, so they are not to thick, and belive that would look good, but i really like the look of beveled glass. It is just classic. Thanks for the comment, maybe the only answer is to make a new door with an easier shape? Or pay the $1000)
Peace out

take the door off and rout the recess for the glass into a large rectangle, you will still see the shape of the door from the front but the glass will just be a simple rectangle!

I can sympathise with you and appreciate the frustration of not being able have the bevelled glass without going to great expense.
I have some GF clocks with the same top as per the clock face door. I didn't have a great choice in glaziers here in Perth to bevel the half circle to square shoulder. After 3 attempts and the glass cracking at those internal corners the Glazier no more so I settled for plain glass in that section with bevelled in all the rectangular sections

When you say bevelled edge - are we talking a clear bevel or the frosted kind?
The rectangle of glass as suggested above would certainly work well - The clock looks magnificent and I don't think clear glass would detract from it at all.

I made the same mistake roughly ten years ago, made a fancy shape door then expected an average price for glass, oh boy what a kick in the freckle that was, I did what I suggested above and it sliced the original price by two thirds, I then went bevelled glass with a diamond shape ground bevel in the centre which added a third to the cost of the glass, remembering this was a while ago it cost around $450, I since sold the clock to a feller who offered me more money than I could resist, I will make another "one day", I wouldn't go leadlight, I think it would detract if anything, of course this is merely my opinion which I quite often take no notice of!

I to love the workman ship you have done with the clock.
Have thought about making one for years, has not happened yet.
All I can say, you can not take the money with you and if you, if that is what makes you very happy then get glass as it will only go up in price.

Glass
Hi Meuls
I have a guy in Maryborough Qld who does all that and more.
He will cut and hand bevel whatever you want.....and I would think for a lot less than $1000.....I have seen some of his restoration work and it is perfect.
PM me if you are interested in contacting him.
Cheers
