Ahhh Grasshopper
Well its finally finnished. This is a clock that I have made for my wife for her 30th.
I managed to find a place at Labradore QLD which sells Birch Ply...I used 5mm 10ply and 3mm 6 ply. They even have .4mm 3 ply....yes POINT 4mm.
The clock also calculates the day of the week and AM/PM. The AM/PM is in the bottom right corner (looking at the face) I am yet to put a black semicircle on it to describe the night part of the circle.
The small hand on the bottom left corner shows the day of the week. As a matter of fact, I got the gearing wrong for the day of the week and ended up having to to rush to work out and make a new gear train with what gearing opportunities I had. It worked out in the end.
This clock was actually designed about a year ago, but with a house build and move in the middle, I only had 1 1/2 months to cut the parts on my cnc and put it together, which might sound like a lot, but it isn't when its a prototype and we have a 2 year old...I have to steal every 5 minutes I could...
With this clock I also melted the lead to fit it into a smaller container...its a lot easier that I first thought...
This clock has got a lot more gears in it than my last which had some sealed bearings in it. This clock has mostly open rollerbearings in it and a couple of brass tube with stainless rod bearings and it. This new one with the open bearings easily runs on the same mass that only just ran my last clock with the sealed bearings in it! Obviously the open bearings can get dust in them, but so fas so good.
Hope you enjoy the pics.
Cheers
rosco
P.S. there is also a pic in there of the 'maintaining power' It works great.

Inevitable question, plans?

Grasshopper,
You have shown us that you can record time.....now you must learn to control it.
Master
(At 30 yo, wouldn't you be too young to remember Grasshopper?)
A great effort. Well done- absolutely marvellous piece of work.

I would love to put some DXF's together for anyone, but time is not on my side, so it could be quite a while.
If anyone would like dimensions to make a grasshopper, I can easily put that together. Just ask.
I still haven't mounted it on the wall, and I'm hanging to get it 'tuned'
Thanks for the kind words.
cheers

A very impressive clock rosco. I have made quite a few clocks but still have to pluck up the courage to make a wooden geared one.

Here is a link to a site that you can download a bunch of files that I have put together for you…
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5186506/grasshopper.zip
Download this .ZIP file and ‘unzip’ it.
Inside the folder is…
2 DXF files of the dimensions of how to make one. They have the same content, just exported different ways.
2 other DXF files of the parts for my grasshopper layed out.
Some close-up pictures of my grasshopper to help you to work it out. And a picture of the ‘dimensions’ DXF.
A txt file called ‘readme’. Read it to learn more details about the grasshopper.

Rosco, No joy," Autocad Dwg Launcher has encoutered a problem and has to close." Not having much luck. Today visited the birthplace of John Harrison and looked at his longcase clock but we could only peep through the side window to see a mixture of brass and wood gears.Sincere thanks

Hi Rosco, We have this day managed to redraw the parts of the grasshopper. The DXF files were of course drawn in Rhino and my acad would not interpret them cleanly. Should anyone find the files useful in Acad I will gladly pass them on. A very big thanks.
Cheers

Grasshopper Files
Rosco,
Great clock and a piece you can be proud of.
What I found on the original DXF for dimentions files you posted was that they were a top view of a 3D(2D) drawing. I went to VIEW on the toobar and selected 3D Views on the pulldown and then selected Front View and behold there was the corrected drawing. The only thing I had to do was to scale the drawing into inches (American, you know how it is).
It's hard to find any structured drawings on grasshopper escapements and I truly appreciated yours!
Thanks again for the drawings and if you have any more DXF files on your work I for one would welcome them.
Regards, Bill
