    Default Barometer fit-up advice

I'm branching into new areas and picked up a 70mm barometer fit-up (and matching clock) at the Bris TWWS. I'm about to mount them in two bits of red cedar.

My question is, will the barometer's movement/mechanics benefit from a breather-hole of some sort or will it make no difference to it's accuracy?

My red cedar pieces have arched bases, so I can hide a drill hole (through the base) that intersects the fit-up cavity.

And yes, there will be photos.

Barometers rely on air movement. If they are put into an enclosed hole they will read the moisture in the peice of wood and could sit on rain all the time.

You have 2 choices , drill the hole for the body all the way through the wood or drill a smaller hole 8mm or so all the way through. Drill this hole to line up with the adjustment screw so the movement can be adjusted without having to take all the way out.

Thanks for the advice Jim. I figured it would need some sort of breather but I didn't consider allowing for later adjustment also.

I bought the clock + barometer from your stand and knew I could always fire off an email for help but decided others might benefit from the thread at some other time.

    Thanks again.

    Default Good question

Good question. I'm in the initial stages of a weather station type build, barometer, hygrometer and thermometer. I suppose all three would benefit from increased airflow. hmmm, glad I've not got to far with it as I'm mounting in rather thick stock and was only going to use a forstner for mounting holes...
