    Default Children's Clock Project

Hello, I am a councilor at a camp for children with cancer. This year my wood project is making a clock. I have clock movements and am now making the frame parts for the clock ,top, sides. . I'm using 1/2 " BB/BB plywood. Clock will have a clear plastic face, a 1/8" masonite board formounting the movement. Clock dimension is 8X8" .
Here's my problem, children will get pre cut pieces to assemble. The top and sides will be fastenen with pegs hammered into pre drilled holes. My pegs are bamboo 5MM diameter. I must drill holes into the plywood and I don't want tear out . I use a drill press and a custom sharpened drill bit. Drill is a # 12 diameter. The hole on the top surface is clean, the holes on the bottom side has some tear out and that's what I wish to eliminate. I've experimented with drill speed and found hi speed is better. I drill one hole and flip the piece and drill the second, the second is on the oposite side. One hole is great the other is not so great. The jig I have dose not back up the bottom side ,reason being I have to clear the saw dust each drilling. I have about 800 holes to drill so time is a concern. I can't get a brad point drill to match the 5MM peg.
Any suggestions to solving the tear out issue

G'Day Cliff and welcome to a top forum.
Firstly, complements for helping kids with cancer enjoy a better quality of life with fun, play and woodwork.
I use good quality "brad point bits" for clean holes and when drilling have a clear hardboard base to support the piece I'm drilling through to prevent breakouts or tearouts.

    I hope that helps.
Cheers from the Great Southern Land, crowie

PS - Make sure you post some photos of the kits and the finished clocks....
