Thread: First clock... A small one

Hi
Well got the clock to run for 15 minutes with reduced weight.
I put a new bushing on the escapement wheel.
Changed the way the weight was pulling on the drum by now having two of them pulling horizontal. This took the weight of the hour shaft that only had a wood bearing.
I put on two post with a ball bearing on the end for the string to run around from horizontal to the vertical. See photo
The steel plates are 110mm wide x 340 long x 9mm thick x 2 off. Have not weigh them yet. But the sums give me 2.64kg each
With the old method I had put so much weight on it broke the pawl arm.
Dean I had to also change the thickness of my pawl just so I could cut it out, it was so very fine, Also change the ratchet wheel so the mill could cut it out and still ratchet.

Wow looks great! Yes the paul really needs beefing up in the plans! The two weights set up is really the way to go; it pulls the shaft in opposite directions thereby reducing friction and twist on the frame. I am right in the middle of cutting out the weight wheels. Whats next for you?

Dean To answer you question "Whats next for you?" no much with the clock. Putting a new roof on the homestead this week. Which mean I have to keep one step in front of the roofers putting in two new skylight tunnels and some known repairs. Let hope no to many unknown repairs. Just waiting for sunrise so I can get started
Have not been able to get the clock to run again, Maybe because of the rain
Have ordered some Teflon bearings will give them a try.

It's alive
The problem I was having the was to many thing to adjust. So I ended up making a wood rocker and tight the pengulum mount and it running again. Also gave the escapement wheel a very fine sand to smooth the working surfaces.
Just made a longer pengulum rod and added a little more weight to the bob. It is now keep better time.
Just got to say the ticking of the clock in the shed is very soothing, better the the talking heads on the radio.vapourforge.com

Oh very jealous now...my electro pendulum arrived today and cannot wait to install it. I was planning to hide it inside the pendulum but the battery box fits 4XD size batteries! Thats now out. Looks like I will have to mount it the traditional way! Pics of the pendulum wheels on Saturday...

Great new Dean. That didn't not take that long to get it here. If it's not a rude question what was the cost landed here?
Just been thinking about my wheels today and I will use the Teflon bearing which I pick up today. But I will wait till I see yours. Might be able to steal a good Idea or two.
Been thinking that I might make another one with all the mods included not as second thoughts I have two pages of one lines. Just a few more hours of cad to do and it will all be done
The first one will get a spot in the shed some where there is no dust or wind or flying objects and the new one is to go in my study.
Well I have one fan with my son wanting one as well for his recently finish renovated lounge room. As if the book case was not enough, 4mt wide 2.7mt high with cabinets across the bottom made from 32mm mdf and painted. Weights a ton... are, but it's family.

The cost of the electromagnetic pendulum was About $ 65 Inc delivery which was 10ish working days. A second clock that would be gratifying to do another and incorporate all those refinements!

I been making a new design for the mounts and frame.
This will let the clock drop into two bracket screwed to the wall. The frame will carrier the two pulleys shafts that take the weighs while pulling horizontally on the hour shaft.
Been designing up some weight boxes also. Just got a pile of lead flashing off the roof repairs that are happening here. Got enough for many clocks. Now is that a nice thought.

Got the mount sorted and working.
The sides are mortised onto the wall pieces and glued, but held it up with out glue for testing anyway.
But the clock just drops into place I put some legs on the frame at the bottom that fit up to the wall as added support but there is no load on them but it is insurance for the future.

Now have the weight boxes done.
Used sheet lead of the roof repair that happening here.
Balanced them against the temporary weights.
The boxes are mortised fully together with a brass bar that is removable by twisting it. Still to make the lids.
Also you can see the two pulleys for the two weights from top of clock.

Wow Russell thats impressive!. Like the way the clocks mounts to the wall as well. I also like the look of your weight boxes...btw how much weight is in them?

Yes the wall mounting took awhile to work out. It also hold the front frame and rear frame together.
I have had the clock running with no glue at all but in the long run it will be glue in places so that it can be taken apart if needed.
Weight = 2.7kg per box less 450gr as the counter weight
Next step is to make some sexier looking gears.
At the moment the clock is out in the shed and at about 10pm it stops but I think it only the cold as it dropping down too less then 10'c over night. It runs all day no problems.
The finish is the next thing to think about so any advise on thing to use please do not be shy.
Was thinking about doing a two tone on the clock face segments odds stained and the evens in clear. Then the frame stained and the gears done in a mix of stained and clear.
Pendulum rod in clear and the bob stained
First thoughts only do not be shy to suggest.....

The numbers I am looking at flooding them with epoxy tinted with black and a drop of white and the large dot at each number with white
