Thread: First clock... A small one

Well had a bit of time to play and found the problem was not with the clock but with the operator.
As the the clock run and the string played out of the drum the diameter decreased. The diameter changes by 10mm on the drum as it has two string and a narrow drum, this makes a big difference to the weight needed at the start to the weight need at the end .
So far i have add about 500gr to keep it running. It has a running time so far of 29 hours and the weights still have 125mm to go to reach the floor.
Next is to restart the clock with the new weight and see if it runs nonstop
Dean I do not see humidity being to much as a problem as this clock is made from ply wood.

It has now been running for two days. First day it was 5 minutes fast, second day it is three minutes fast. Hope the bob screw is long enough.....
Now I must work out the best time for winding it am, pm or before bedtime. Such decisions....

Russell I realized that I needed an extra wide drums to minimize the growth in diameter with my compounding set up. Hopefully when I fully wind mine up it went run too fast! Yes plywood is not affected by humidity as much....lucky beggar! I have spent some time correcting the high spots in neofascist my gear. I have read in an article that freezing the timber can alter its mechanical properties. I will look into this.

Clock has been performing very well after I found the frame was not fully in wall mounts so the frame was twisted. I have got the time keeping to with in 30 seconds in 24 hours, I pleased
I have reduced the total weight by about 1kg. That leaves about 2.4 kg and still more to come off I think. When I have a final running weight I will put the weighs on some scales.
Dean
I will be interest in your frozen wood trials.

I am getting 32.5 hours between winds
Just weighed the weights, a total of 2041 gr or 180 * 20 cent coins which is a stack 415mm high
Will need to see if it can run full time at this weight. May need some twicking as the weather changes but I do not think it will need much.

Russell how is your ratchet gear going for wear? With each wind I see a small fine sprinkling of tooth wear on my lower frame member. I wonder about the long term prospects of the ratchet and whether I should at some time replace with some metal componentry?

This has been an interesting read and I am glad that I have been following it.

Dean
Have not seen any sawdust but have not looked either. I think the glue joints in my plywood would add much strength in this area also.
Re the metal components would be a last resort I would be looking at different timbers and design first. Maybe it is just wearing away the sharp edges and it will come to a comfortable shape and be ok.
Christos glade to have you along for the ride
