    Default First fit-up

As promised, here are some quick pics of my first fit-up project. Anniversary present for other half. They'll probably gather dust in her office.

Timber is Red Cedar. I picked it up from the off-cut bin at from Mal's Boutique Timber stand at Bris TWWS.

I split it in two (seems way to small a cut to call it anything but a split) to try to get a mirror image in the grain. I decided to cut so one side would finish a little thicker than the other for the barometer. The two pieces are slightly different heights partly because the wood had some splits and cracks that needed both disguising and removing.

The edges and corners are shaped by hand with a rasp and 80 grit sandpaper. My left shoulder is still too dodgy to trust with fast moving machinery and sharp blades anyway (I discovered the hard way that one twinge and the piece is shot.). Sanded to 600 grit, finished with Organoil hard burnishing oil and buffed at speed with an arbor mounted lambswool pad in a drill press.

    Fit-ups are 70mm.

First pic is with natural light. Second and third are with flash and closer in colour to the untreated wood.

They look fantastic. I'm sure the other half will love them... and dust them from time to time.
