Galileo escapement
18 odd months ago when I had first started this hobby i made a own design clock.
It was based on Galileo's design. Unfortunately it ran backwards and the hour hand rotated in 40 minutes on 1 kg weight
Anyway after making a Brian Laws and a David Atkinson design I revisited it this week with new found knowledge. I made the pendulum into a compound and some other changes.DSCF0438.jpgDSCF0439.jpgDSCF0441.jpg
Now, despite looking like a refugee from the scrap bin It runs now on .25 KG and rotates the right way in 60 minutes.
Probably should just remake the whole thing now with a set of dial gears added.
I have Gearotic software and cut out a Grasshopper escapement using the default settings this week. The photos show the mock up on a piece of MDF and 3 mm hoop pine ply.
This works when powered by hand although it looks like 3 mm gears are a bit narrow, 5 or 6 mm might be better to keep the gears meshed and aligned

It's always nice to see people designing their own clocks and making the idea work. I like the grasshopper escarpment and you've given me the confidence to have a go myself. Have you got another clock planned which will include it?

next step
The grasshopper was made from dxf's generated from Gearotic software. I was interested in if it would work and it does. All the gear shaft distances look right and the escapement works.
I learnt from this that 3 mm gears are a bit narrow, any wobble or distortion causes the gears to disengage with the pinion. Maybe the pinions should be wider to stay engaged. The escapement needs spring stoppers and not the hard stops as I made.
I really like the layout for the Septimus as Eastlake has posted so I will have to think about that but use the gears and grasshopper I have. Only two projects to finish and that is number three.
The Galileo escapement is very simple and easy to adjust, it does seriously interrupt the rhythm of the pendulum so you can see why it wasnt a long lived escapement

Gearotic software
I do like the Gearotic software. There are two escapements provided and both work. I haven't tried any other gear generators.
