Grandfather Clock Sound
Quick Question, How much does the chamber/box/enclosure/body, of a grandfather clock affects the sound of it?
I assume it can make a big difference in the sound ie like a speaker box.
Anyone?
Cheers
Shawn

Sound
Howdy Shawn,
I use solid timber in the clock case and on the back.
(The chime block mounts onto the clock back.)
The first case I made ,i used plywood for the back.
It was not until I made a second clock, (that had a solid back) and had the two side by side, that I heard the sound difference.
The ply sounded tinny compared to the real timber.
Cheers

Hi Mach, I have built a couple of grandfather/mother clocks. I can tell you that there are sound differences not only from the mechanism type you use but also from how you decide to build the sides. If you use glass viewing panels to see the mechanism the sound seems clearer and less muffled than using solid timber. If you position the clock against a flat wall the sound again is affected. The best position I have found for my grandfather clock in my lounge is positioned in a corner. The chimes seem to bounce off the angle of the corner and out into the room. Best bet is to find a good clockmaker/supplier that has a few set up in his shop and have a good listen. Hope this helps.

Hi. I've seen old long case clocks, with bell strike, that actually have a hole in the top to get a better sound. If I did that I'd put a bit of speaker cloth over it to keep the dust out, though.
