Okay, I hope that link works, this was STAR wanting to build a grandfather clock, my reply to STAR's first post there below:

Hi STAR

I know this is an old post and you have had time to develop your skill, have you made your Grandfather clock as yet?

I am very new to wood work, have limited equipment but have access to equipment, I plan to build my tool collection up, I am dead keen on building my own grandfather clock. Was the reading material that was posted in this thread enough for you to go on? Helped you make up your mind on building one or not?

I am well aware it could cost me thousands without including your own time you need to put into it, so I plan on this taking a few years at the very least. A work colleague of mine has built one and has taken a number of years for him to complete, it is absolutely beautiful.

Seeing his, and visiting a couple of clock places, just made me even more determined to make my own, had a few people saying don't bother trying, I simply am not accepting that answer, I just want to know how I can do it.

I hope to hear how you went or your decisions that you made, very eager to hear other peoples (beginners and less experienced people) experiences and thoughts.

Hi Sean,
Your link to Star's thread worked well. I will be watching this thread closely. I, also, am a very beginner woodworker, with ambitions to build a nice clock. case. I am not ambitious enough to aim for a Grandfather Clock, but hope to eventually work my up to a Vienna Regulator type clock.

Last year, I made a small stand for an aquarium, out of Pine. More recently, I built a "Bracket" style clock case, (also out of pine) to house an orphaned movement that I picked up for a few bucks on eBay. (see this thread for my Bracket clock. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f168/y...-clock-167114/ The aquarium stand is visible in a couple of shots in the background to the right.)

I purchased a non functioning Vienna movement and have been playing around with getting it working. When I have it going, I need to buy (or make) a pendulum, weights, gong, etc, and then hope eventually to make the case.

This clock would have originally looked like this...
IMG_0189.jpg but I suspect that even with a LOT of practice, I am not likely to ever become capable of replicating the original case. I am thinking that something a bit simpler, like this V4.jpg
might be more achievable!

At the moment, it is all "Pie in the sky" stuff, but hopefully, one day, we will get there!

I have had a secret ambition, since I was a child, to make my own Grandfather clock. Maybe one day!

Some nice work there, I must say you are quite modest with your skill, I would be over the moon to be at that level. I am driving my missus up the wall with all this wood working talk, I will get it started, I don't think that I will get it started this year, but, when I do get started, I will be sure to create a thread to show my progress, I think it will be a very long project.

First thing I will do is purchase the timber, my first research project will be the sort of timber that is needed as a minimum, and what the rolls royce of timbers are and everything in between (within reason, not going to become a botanist

Will just be working on it in stages, I will need to learn about the movements, will do some "bed time" reading, with the link you provided, thank you for that, so much more to it than simply cutting a bit out here and there and gluing it all together.

This is off topic, apologies for that folks, but I am planing on making a large toy box, maybe out of discarded Chep pallets, nice cheap(ish) project.

I figure that any project is practice for the next (and more complex) project. I had planed to make a Toy Box once. Got a full sheet of MDF cheap. The plan was to make it go around three sides of the Bay Window in the rumpus room. The lids were to be hinged at the back and padded on top to make seats. Unfortunately, I am still looking for that "Round Tuit". I don't think I could dig through the junk to get to the Bay Window any more!!

I still have the sheet of MDF (about 8 years old now!). I wonder what type of clock case I could make out of MDF?
