Thread: Recommend timber for Grandfather Clock

I spent ages agonising over which timber to use. Ideally I wanted to use Western Red Cedar, but it's hard to come by and comes at a great price. And after a lot of pondering etc. I settled on Fijian Mahogany. It's ethically sourced from Fijian plantations.

• It's very easy to work;
• Isn't too soft; and
• a lot of what I've got has really nice figure running through it;
• doesn't have veins; and
• I've never had any heartwood.

As it is, the Fijian Mahogany I'm getting from Matthews Timber in Melbourne is $90 per lineal metre. I used to be able to get it in 500mm wide boards which was great. Had I known then that a year later I would only be able to get boards in no more than 300mm width, I would've bought a stack of it.
