what size teeth on wooden gears
Hi to wooden gear clock makers. Most wooden geared clocks have a Diametral pitch of 11 or 13, which gives a resonably sized tooth which can be cut on a scroll saw. Has anyone tried a bigger pitch (smaller tooth) on any type of wood, to enable a smaller clock to be made.
I'm experimiting with smaller teeth and a 100 beat per minute clock ,maybe it will work or I will have a heap of stripped gears.
regards John.

small diameter wooden gear
Hi !
I think you can cut small diameter wooden gear if you use old and very dry hornbeam timber with very high speed borer machine . I used to 10 years old hornbeam.

John on the verge and foliot clock that I recently completed the wheels had a diametrical pitch of 16. I made the wheel out of segments of an NZ timber called Tawa and it was not too difficult to cut on a scrollsaw. I have just checked the plans for the wheels on Clayton Boyers clock "Lolli" and they are at 13.
Regards,
Rhys
