Waldo’s Grandfather clock
And so it begins.
I’ve always wanted to build a grandfather clock and looking for an idea for my next large and lengthy project I thought it’d be a great idea to look at building one.
My search started with trying to find an Australian importer of Hermle movements who also sold plans. Initially I had settled on Clock Plan 912 HB Design suits 1151 from CMI-Hermle in Brisbane. A great big box duly arrived 3 days later after ordering, however I soon realised the plans I bought weren’t really what I wanted. So I searched for a style of grandfather clock that was more of what I was wanting.
So after a lot of looking I ended up getting the plans Movement/703.11RDial/PL.22/for Plan912-9 from Klockit in the US. The only thing was that the Madison is built around a different clock face with dimensions that didn’t match the Hermle movement, but the clock case had the right width and depth to suit.
As great as the plans are, they’re in imperial, which I understand pretty well, to a degree. Rather than convert imperial to metric I decided to stay with imperial. What I did have to do was redraw the basic parts and work out how the dial face fits to the trim panel from the Madison and make sure the datum line of everything still matched to the Hermle movement.
In the meantime, I visited Canterbury Clocks in Canterbury to look over their clocks to and to ask the bloke there 20 questions and pop over to Graeme Brown Antiques to pick up the brass hardware that I’ll need.
So with a long weekend down here and itching to get a start on things I’ve started on the template jigs.
This won’t be a quick job, it’ll take me a while and I’m not in a hurry anyway. Besides, there’s the issue of where it’ll go once it’s finished and right now that space is taken up the my daughter’s budgie.

The little bird flys free in the house, but I wouldn’t see the day out if something else happened.

G’day fellas, I’m working out the front crown moulding template for the crown front frame. I’ll have some shots up for those eagerly waiting with popcorn and shavings tomorrow.

With a four day weekend I had the luxury of getting some great shed time, gotta love that.
Friday I finished off the templates I’d been working on, there are still many more to come yet. I’ve spent a fair bit of time on these templates, only because if they’re not perfect they’ll come back to bite me later on. To make the process of the templates much more precise I got out to Carbatec about a month back and picked up a Jet bencktop oscillating spindle sander.
Today’s goal was all about working out the crown moulding. The moulding is laid out in the Klockit plans, but I’ve spent a lot of time looking at grandfather clocks on some YouTube channels and in the flesh and thought I’d rather come up with my own moulding. So, now that I’ve got the moulding figured out, I’ll go through the careful process of working out the templates for each of the four segments that make up the crown moulding.

Like the moulding, what glue are you considering to make the stack into one and method of attachment?

Bob

G'dy Bob, I used Titebond II and gimp pins to make the stack. Eventually the moulding with be glued to the crown frame and screwed from the back.

A couple of weeks ago as I looked over the moulding I’d put together I realised that I’d orientated it the wrong way and the was no way and if it was the right way I wouldn’t be able to do this on the router table anyway.
So I spent sometime looking over how to fix things and set things right. So this now is the crown moulding.

This morning I went out to Mathew's Timber to have a look at the Qld Maple they had in stock and and get some. Initially they didn't have any, but after a bit of scrummaging around they found some way back behind everything else, but they couldn't get to it today because they'd have to move all the other cubes of timber by forklift to get to it. I could however get to some other stuff. The bloke said he'd give me a good deal on what was reachable and looking at it the Qld Maple it had some really good figure running through it, so I said I take all they had.
The sizes ranged from 50mm through to with 100mm in thickness, but only up to 100mm in width. In the back of my mind, even though I'd get this now, to make the clock out of maple I'd have to resign to jointing smaller stuff to get 240mm+ widths that I need and at the end of the day I knew that would be a compromise.
As I was at the counter paying for the stuff, I saw leaning against the wall a nice wide piece of timber, turns out it was nice piece of Fijian Mahogany. Thinking over this driving back home and what I already have in the shed I'm going to change from the idea of building this grandfather clock out of Old Maple to now be Fijian Mahogany.
The Qld Maple I got this morning has beautiful figure, but given I just can't get the widths I need and the quantity.
The mahogany below is nicely figured and some of what I've already got. So now, next Saturday I'll go back out and load the trailer up with some mahogany.
