Anagote Timbers....Amazing place...15 Renwick st Marrickville. Originally I got all the timber I used from Trend timbers in Windsor. Since then I have ran out of European beech on a number of occasions, and since Anagote in around the corner I have been going there ever since.
Decided to use a brand new cutter bit today and dont know about you, but to me a brand new bit one is a hazard in that you cant predict what size it will cut. I decided to" temper" it by finishing my final 15T gear rather than start on the 6OT gear that will hold the two pauls. So today I patiently "wore" in the new cuter before doing any fancy trisoloc joints. These joints dont like a variation of .1mm! I
I remember what you said about cutter bits; first you cut, then meaure it and make that the diameter that you cut at.Great idea. My software (modella player 4) wont alow that.
ps hows that yoke free concept coming along?

A quick update...finished the 3 piece ratchet gear. Turned out a treat.
The finished gear runs true and hopefully will withstand winding the 10kgs day after day.
Have started on my final gear! I managed to complete 4 of the six pieces this week; hopefully if time permits I will have time to finish the two pauls as well. Now where thats beer!

Hi all,
I have spent the last week cutting out the blanks to form my final 60 Tooth gear. I have never done a 6 piece gear before but should go well. The new gear will hold the double paul design. So far so good. These take forever as each piece has to be checked against the piece thats next to it before its removed from the CNC. The pic shows the 6 individual pieces prior to gluing. The fit is so tight that I am afraid to apply glue untill I press each piece half way together. Today I used a large offset metal vice to press each piece together., removing the excess glue each time. The last 60T gear I remembered I resorted to using a lump hammer!. I found the vice quick and I felt I was less likely to snap one of those joints off in the process. From experiece I like to have a straight run as my final join. It was a stressfull process as there is no return if anything goes wrong I would have to start over again.
Thank God that part is over!.
Tomorrow I will drum sand the blank flat and then its onto the CNC.

Hi all
Here is my newly designed 60T gear. Before I finally commit to the new design I realised tonight that I will have to trim the new pauls so that they dont interfere with each other. By doing so will I be loosing any strength in the pauls? I will also need to add some onto the end of the pauls so that they mesh with the ratchet teeth properly. What do you think Russell or anyone else?
cheers

The pauls is a poor design I will have a go at a new one for you.
The ratchet arm should be straight from the tooth to the pivot point the paul.

Here is my attempt.
If you want to have a go using it, I will email you the shape ok
I think you might have to thin the spring part of the pauls if it is to hard to turn the ratchet wheel, but try it and see.

Hi all here is the finished gear.
I took particular care to make the trisoloc design exit between the teeth rather than through the middle. Just finished a prototype paul so hopefully by the end of the day will have some more progress to report on.
cheers
