Have just completed some prototypes.....first one is too thin second one too thick. Have just re-modified profile and seem to have done it correctly.Just off to cut the final two now....The prototypes were made from a softer timberr to save my cuter bit; hopefully the euro beech ones will be purfect.

Here is the final ratchet cluster with the finished pauls.....they work well..prephaps they are a bit stiff but not by much. Only time will tell if the pauls will wear the ratchet teeth unecessarily. The only change to the final pauls were the angle that the curved paul end terminated at; I made it match straight leg (pic 2). The grain of the straight is parallel to the grain in the timber to maximise strength.

Spent the day making my upper wieght frame that sits above the clock. Here are some pics of how the clock goes together from the wall.

Hope to install the mini cogs tomorrow once their location is finalised! The round cog above is the pendulum head; the pendulum rod fits into the a hole (inside the middle leg) and will be bolted in.

That is a serious bit of framing. I like the way the grain continues even though there is a join in the middle. We done.

Not too hard to achieve if your not in a rush! Here is a pic of my mini cogs. The design had me beat untill I choose the simpliest design; a brass rod with a flat spot to srew the cog into. Easy......
    .
Will have the second weight frame prototype completed in a couple of hours if all goes well. I did not allow enough space to house the mini cogs! Grr.....

Have finished the new weight wheels frame. Hopefully tonight I will be able to re-assemble and get the whole ticking again and test out all my new improvements.

    cheers

I love how you and Russell just crank out the parts. You guys would make 5 clocks by the time I finish the cogs of one...

I am on schools hols at the moment. That would be Russell who cranks outs clocks not me! I am on my third year with this one...I think. I make too many mistakes and sometimes complicate things. I doo enjoy myself especially today when things did go right!

The re-assembly went well last night. Loaded it up with 10kg and off she went for 10minutes or so. Left it to run overnigt after some more adjustements. Got up twice during the night to find it had stopped working! Decided to pull it down and re-balance the pendulum and observe the gears more closely. The pendulum was swinging wildly and hitting the top 40mm dowell! it was more or less bouncing at the end of its stroke. at other times it would slow down and come to a halt. On inspection one of the 4 spoke gears had 2 very samll high spots. I carefully filed them away, re-adjusted the winding cog. For most part the speed variation has dissappeared but was still on the very fast side. This afternoon I have removed 6.6 kg! and it has been running all afternoon. The escarpment used to make a definit clunk but now its alot quieter. So far soo good. It has been a stressful day but once again it has turned out well. To fine tune the weight i will use pet bottles with water to adjust the weight as I only have 1 kg weights.

"An honest days labour.....always presents a smiling face"......you will succeed Dean...and as always.....Rome was not built in a day.........and finally as Grandfather told me a long time ago,
If you start something....finish it.....dont start it if you are not going to do it......properly!
Shall enjoy viewing your completed masterpiece....in full......and possibly.....with a hint of sound!
    All the best, PB.

Sound like it was a great day. Well deserved after the lead up work do by you.
Are you saying that your clock now runs on 4.4kg. What do you think made it so efficient now?
Now some pics of the whole clock please....

The new clock design is still moving along the only problem is life gets in the way some times.
