Hi all here is a sneek preview of my new and hopefully final gear train arrangement. I am up early this morning fed the cats and now onto more important things; clock building. Once i got over the initial shock of having to re-do the lot I was off. The first pic shows the original configuration which I can easily go back to if needed.

The pics above show the timing wheel now in the middle; the drum now at the rear. Hopefullu over the weekend or early next week i will have a working porototype to play with. The weights will be hand wound by a 300mm gear at the rear; not yet made. I will be doing away with 2 15T gears that used to do that.

Spent sat making the drum and extra long gear connectors. I will have to replace the upper brass shaft in case this gear train design goes pear shaped. I need 600mm of 3/8 brass rod. Does anyone know of a supplier here in Sydney?

If you can't find a supplier that will sell you 600mm instead of 3 or 6 metres, try going to an engineering shop and see if they have 600mm lying around somewhere that they might sell for a few dollars.

    Good luck.

I was drilling the new drum which is 55mm long. The old one was 25mm.I decided to buy a 4mm long series drill bit and drill the hole from one end. As long as I did not push too hard I thought I would get away with it.a So much for long series dril bits...Will have to use a shorter one from each end. Oh well

    Bugger.

I would have thought the same too. Only one hole went off? Did you hit a knot or such in the drum?

I drilled two then decided to ckeck the sucees or otherwise to discover both were off! I will use this drum as a prototype. No I did not hit a knot or such....A hole this long needs to be drilled from both ends or use a slightly shorter drill bit On a brighter note I finished another 6 spoke 60T gear and another 20T gear; both bearing mouinted. This was the only gear that had a high spot. More in pictures soon.

I find this a little strange. Are you sure your work table is exactly perpendicular to the drill shaft at all points around the drill shaft?

Or was it possibly the wood's grain that tended to push the drill bit off course?

Its the grain and the length of the long series drill bit.

Here is some of the progress I have made in the last 2 weeks. I had to specially order 90mm 4mm diameter hex head bolts. I still cannot beleive that they make these this long, but they do. Lucky for me the prosepect for me to hand make an alternative would have been bulky and for one reason I discovered would not have worked. I made the 3 extra wide drums and bolted them together, installed them and adjusted them to suit the new gear train. I made a 6 spoke bearing mounted 60T isoloc wheel to replace the 4 spoke isoloc that had a small high spot. Also remade a 20T bearing mounted to go with the 60T to form a cluster. I still need to pin the escapment and drum and make a small wheel for the RHS string to change direction to enable it to pul the drum in the right direction. THe LH pic is the old gear train and the RH pic is the new. Man I feel tired....but happy. I guess a full gear train re-design is exhausting. I am largely happy with the gear train symmetry but would like to move the escarpent over a bit so it sits in the middle.

Hi all a quick update. Finally re- assembled the clock tonight. Finished re- pinning the escarpment and the drum. Added the single gear on the rhs and applied some weights. The clock has been happily ticking over for half an hour or so on 10kgs. Hoped for a reduction in weight but that was a fanciful hope on my part. The whole set up is better; less frame distortion and even the tick sound less forced. The new 6 spoke gear is great; no more tight spots! Will post some pics tomorrow but for now I am nackered but happy.
