Would it have been feasable to turn that weight wheel 90 degrees on the horizontal, and put in on the lowest axle? Or would it then be too close to the thread drum?
Cheers

Using the plain youtube link, add &feature=youtube_gdata_player to the link.
So it becomes http:// youtube.com/watch?v=xxxxxxxxxxx&feature=youtube_gdata_player

thanks Rod how did you learn to do that? .....Dont quite understand what you are proposing with turning the weight wheel horizontal; if you mean to mount it as an idler on the lower shaft that wont work. 5kg running through any shaft will stop the clock working.
Sawdustsniffer it works ok at my end must be yours prephaps. What player are you using? Have you tried it out on Youtube?

No I have 10kg running the clock 5 down each side.....I tried re-routing the rhs string using two idlers but they didnt work. Now I have the two 5ks running on the drum but now they are pulling more or less opposide each other; in this way they are a couple and cancel each other out in terms of torsional forces.ce?

And here's a thought,
I wonder if a larger drum diameter would help your weight issue?
We all know, when we need to lever something, we get the longest bit of pipe or 4 x 2 to do the lift. So if the string was pulling from a larger radius away from the axle, it would require less force, hense weight, to do the same job.
Just a thought.

A larger drum will significantly affect the running time.........wheres that options box located? to embed stuff?

But would it though?
With a larger radius, it would turn slower in order to keep the same time? Or would there have to be a change in the gear ratios somewhere?
wheres that options box located? to embed stuff?

No a larger radius drum would mean less weight required but would not affect gear ratios in any way.The larger drum would mean that there are fewer turns thus shorter run time.

Hi all next up for me is the handwheel. Here is a prototype I did. Not quiet happy with how much timber I will be using so have started on a design that is built like an old fashioned wagon wheel. It will use alot less timber but has structural difficulties associated with its manufacture. Below is a pic of my original design.

Hi all have have started on my handwheel; it is 300mm in diameter; bigger than my machine can handle. This will replace the crank and square shaft from the front of the clock. The pic below shows the original design. I have always to do a design that went together like an old fashioned wagon wheel. Still finalising trhe design but I am keen on it because it used alot less timber than the design below.
