GIS lug rig measurements
I've lost track of where we are supposed to send deflection measurements for our GIS rigs. So I'm going to post them here and hope they somehow find their way into the wiki.
These are the measurements for my current, out-of-the-plans rig, which I use with a standard Duckworks sail and a lashed foot. I was halfway through building a box boom when my wife broke a thumb, after which she tore a knee ligament, putting all work on hold until I'm no longer Chauffeur-In-Chief. I will post numbers for the box boom when I finish it, someday.
Mast: Square box per plans. Sides are old-growth Douglas Fir. Spacers are Western Red Cedar. No hardware except a fairlead at the top and a plastic cleat at the bottom. Mass is 10.3 Kg.
Boom: Tapered round boom per plans. Two pieces of old-growth Douglas Fir laminated together; epoxy join runs vertically. Mass is 2.6 Kg. Deflection with 10 Kg weight is 38mm.
Yard: Same construction as boom. Mass is 2.6 Kg. Deflection with a 10 Kg weight is 42mm.
Looking at the wiki, I seem to have achieved some sort of loser trifecta. All three spars are heavier than all other per-spec spars, yet I have far more deflection in the boom and yard than anyone else. Not sure how I managed that.

I'll try again with a different scale. But I don't think the first one was too far off. I used a bucket of water for the deflection weight and it certainly looked like it had about 10 liters of water in it. (As a homebrewer, I've developed a pretty good eye for estimating water volume.) And, while my deflection measurements might be off by a few mm, the deflections were definitely in the 4 cm range, give or take.
The spars are plenty strong. Just very whippy.

Howdy Paulie,
Added your spars to the WIKI - WIKI for setting up and tuning Lug and Sprit Rigs | Storer Boat Plans in Wood and Plywood
Cheers!
