    Work time...

I'm dreaming about my sailing canoe still...

I've found article about another Beth's predecessor from 1923:

    http://canoesailingmagazine.com/inde...ing-Canoe.html

She is more time consuming and harder to build and plans are less detailed (suitable for experienced boatbuilders only - I think) - I prefer Beth !!!

Sailing canoes are really exciting boats.

    Progress in building project???
Tomorrow I will to continue... masking and epoxy coating of panels etc.
    Aloha!

    Yes MIK - they are

Yesterday and today I've worked with my sailing canoe Beth "Yuanfen" again:

    1. I've masked by masking tape on all prepared panels areas for glue.

...and I've try to see my boat in 3D...

    ...all panels masked...

    2. I've coated bottom and side panels by epoxy:

...bottom coated, masking tapes removed before epoxy hardened...

    ...in 3D again ...

    ...and side panels precoated too...

Unfortunatelly I haven't room for coating all prepared panels on the same time - bulkhaeds and knees needs to be coated later (both sides of them)
    ... soon I hope so
    Aloha!

But I think than photos in low density are - I can see many of "lumps and bumps"

The photos are very instructive too!
    For future Beth's builders...

    Hi Robert

Great pictures and narrative about what you are doing. Your workmanship looks first class and I'll be following your progress with a great deal of interest.

My first priority will be my GIS, but I'm starting to like the Beth a lot too, so maybe I'll build one of these next! I've had to delay the start of my GIS for financial reasons. We have a business and things seem to slowing dramatically all of a sudden, so I think consumer confidence and Ruddy's handouts are starting to run out. This means that money budgeted for the Goat will have to be spent in the business for now But, we'll get there somehow....

Keep up the great work and the pictures!

    Thank you woodeneye!
My workmanship isn't first class - I'm a follower of MIK's manual ... Tell to the truth I'm first time builder - I didn't build a boat from start to finish. Circa 13 years ago I've rebuild and rigged for sail a hull of prototype of MICRO CLASS (inland and coastal class of French proveniency, this one designed and hull's built by Polish boatdesigner J.Piesniewski) boat:
    http://www.robert_hoffman.republika....t_Bibola01.jpg

...and no more... than Beth "YuanFen" will be my first boat built by myself sensu stricto.

My first priority will be my GIS, but I'm starting to like the Beth a lot too, so maybe I'll build one of these next! I've had to delay the start of my GIS for financial reasons.
GIS is really great and suitable for daysailing with two ...and three. And for touring/cruising with two I think so.
Beth is generally for one and ...incidentally for short daysailing for two.
She will be a bit cheaper than GIS I think so. But she is a sailing canoe only...

We have a business and things seem to slowing dramatically all of a sudden,
I see... In my country is a bit similar situation...
    Aloha!

    Hi All again

On last thuersday I've made long battens for chinelogs and sheerclamps. They needs to be a bit longer than boat's LOA but it's very difficult to buy long timber battens without knots - Possible is to join shorter battens by scarphing and glueing of them. Scarphs needs to be 6 times longer than batten's thicknes... I've made it first time by myself...:

    ...layout battens for scarphing...

...scarphing by electric plane and hand plane...

    ...almost done

...glueing scarphed battens for long battens

Unfortunatelly two of them were glued wrong - Today I've skarphed them again and glued again ...with two brass nails to keep them at place:

    They are glued OK yet!!!

Today I've coated by epoxy first side of bulkhaeds, centrecase and knees too:
    ...layout for coating...

First side of those parts coated, masking tape just removed.

Hoping to coat another side of those parts - tomorrow...
    Aloha!

On last Wenesday ( just lately!!!) I've coated another side of bulkhaeds, knees and centrecase...

On Thuesday (yesterday) I've marked and cutted off notches for chine logs and for sheerclamps:

...and I've temporary attached (screwed) chine logs to bottom:

...both chinelogs temporary attached to bottom (screwed - no glued yet!)...

Today-tomorrow I want to attach chinelogs to bottom permanently...
    Aloha!

Today I've attached chinelogs to bottom permanently - I've glued them.
Before of it the cocpit area of chinelogs was planed and rounded - no sharp edge on chinelogs on this area.

Chinelogs attaching and glueing - I havn't a lot of clamps than for better pressure I've glued chinelogs fastened by tiny (1,3 mm / 20 mm) brass nails apart circa 5 - 6 cm. Montaging scruews before final hardening of glue were removed. Attaching of chinelogs in the middle and near bow area was very easy but on near stern area was harder indeed - another pair of hands would be helpful (!!!) but I've worked alone...

This day I've prepared stempost and sternpost too - the first one is glueing to bow part of panel of port side!

No photos from this day, but hoping than tomorrow we will see my boat in real 3D
    Aloha!

Yes! A lot of photos from Yesterday and 3D is a fact.

I've attached and glued and nailed (by tiny brass nails as previously chinelogs to bottom) sides to chinelogs and bottom.
This etap was not "soft and easy" - it's especially for two (boat builder with supporting hands)!!! Bottom is so stiff and side panels are so limp and spring... and hard to keep them on place singlehanded... But all was done with succesfully by myself...

Few photos from temporary joining port side panel:

...and finally - at yesterday's evening - both sides joined, glued and fastened by tiny brass nails (temporary screws removed):

You can see more photos there:
