    Dave,
I am sure that your GIS will be at least as attractive (and comfortable for two people) and give you joy soon.

Mizzen? Yes - well you see that mizzen looks different than mainsail. But it's not because of its cut. Mizzen is differently sheeted than mainsail - its sheet of the run almost from the end of the boom when the mainsail sheet of the sail is trailed in about 1/3 the length of the boom, and its sheet pulls down the boom of reducing the mainsail's twist. Therefore mizzen is more twisted than the mainsail.
It is also possible that this course should be mizzen the sheet a bit stretched tighter than it was done.

Unfortunately, rarely are friends with cameras at the same time on the water, when I sail my BETH - because there are not many photos on the fly.

Yes - in the autumn winds tend to be stronger than in summer, but this is only statistics.
    Aloha!

    Hi All,

I've just recived results of speed test by my friend Rudek Wasilewski which he did on Aug 15 2011. He had a GPS failure and has just read out the results from the second one which that was used as a backup.

    Rudek run his test:

    Me on test:

In wind Force 1up to full 2 (Light Air up to full Light Breeze) my BETH "YuanFen" achieved the speed a bit more than 8 km/h that circa 4,32 knots with mainsail reefed on first reef - because both skippers (Rudek and me) were still inexperienced.

    Hello Robert,

Your Beth is a real beauty! Nice reading and pictures.

Looking at the video's of Beth on the web (yours, Norman's and someone's located in, I believe, Florida), Beth seems to be a true speed demon in light airs. I suppose that when the winds get stronger, she will really fly! It must be an exiting boat to sail and very portable.

One question: how do you paddle her if required? Double bladed paddle or single paddle?

    Best regards,

    Joost

    Hi Joost,
Thank you. BETH is really fast but modern racing dinghies faster are. Possible it's because of my lack of fitness and strength - also.
I have single paddle only, but I think that double bladed paddle can be really useful, but it requires the installation of seat and steering system extension for comfort.

There are photos and videos from last weekend - on Sept 03 2011 was Calm and Light Air:

    I met a few friends...
Hoping for more of photos from Sunday when wind was Force 3 - Moderate Breeze - for now I only have pictures taken with my cell phone.

One of my colleagues which sails on the 470-er POL 500 numbered, through his kindness, I know how fast I was sailing with sails up totally reefed - it was 5 knots on reeching, however, was closer and go fast enough. Under these conditions 470 under full sail going 7 knots. I wonder if would go similarly under full sails, or rather, I would have done spectacular capsize?

And in general: why so radically reefed in wind Force 3? At the beginning I sailed with one reef on the mainsail - it was quite exciting and BETH sailed really fast but I found that speeding on the lateral, high and steep waves made by large motorboat and. .. dug in the bow wave, taking half a bucket of water to the cockpit. Additional reefs have decreased my speed, but I also started to walk more dry, which was beneficial for my luggage - camera, documents, cellphone etc (almost all in aquapacks/waterpacks except camera) ...

    Hi All again!

I've sailed my BETH "YuanFen" last Saturday (Sept. 10, 2011) and Sunday (Sept. 11, 2011) on Zegrze Reservoir.

Wind was generally Force 1-2 in Beaufort scale, but were longer times the wind F 3 also.

In Zegrze Północne meeting with Grzegorz Korczynski and his proa Wa'apa "Guajira" (version 4.8 m):

Estern coast of Zegrze Reservoir - ex "Mazowsze" Restaurant and Hotel ruined/dismantled at present:

Few hours I've sailed with borrowed from Rudek Wasilewski GPS recording my route and speed, but for results need to send data to a PC and develop their.

Sunday was probably most beautiful day of end of the Summer. Thanks for friend who sailed dinghy 470 POL500 I know my speed under full sails in one gust: 5.6 knots reaching - wind 5-6 m/s = Force 3 - 4.

Waiting for more sailing photos taken by friends from boats.
    Aloha!

    Hi All,

I just got a photo taken September 10, 2011 by friend Tom Janiszewski.

I also know the average speed at which sailed 10 and 11 September 2011 on the Zegrze Reservoir.
    It was 5 knots.

    Hi,

Yesterday (Sunday, Sep. 18, 2011) was windy day (Force 3-4 with gusts up to 30 knots - Force 7) that I sailed quite reefed. The wind was blowing from the East, so at the Zegrze shore was already swell, and the reflected wave from the shore, so Beth went quite wet, splash, taking on board, the remains of the cockpit, and a little Skipper in the face So after a short time I was wet

BETH requires skillful control when sailing of the wind and the waves - She likes to get into a rolling when running and if waves steep interfered from shore and/or a big motorboats she can quick capsize to the windward.

I have not photos when sailing, I did just a few pictures, when friend Rudek Wasilewski started his sailboarding:

A few minutes later launched the my BETH again and raced with Rudek.
    Aloha!

    Hi All,

There are few photos (and two videos) from last weekend - the last weekend of September and first weekend of this year's Autumn - wich was really warm and called "babie lato" (Indian summer, gossamer, Martinmas summer and word to word: hag's summer) ...

On Saturday (Sep. 24, 2011) wind was Force 3-4. I've met Grzegorz (known as greg470) who is ex 470-er racer and recreational 470-er sailor at present. He tested my BETH "YuanFen" a bit.

First photos are from another friend Marian Jasinski who taken them from his 25 ft cabin boat:

A video taken by me from Greg's few tacks:
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBx8chgUKGo"]BETH "YuanFen" - Zegrze - greg470 run his test - YouTube[/ame]

Grzegorz (greg470) is really heavier than me and for him BETH could be not reefed at all.

This is a photo of Grzegorz's test sail taken by Marian Jasinski:

He registred his route on GPS and hoping to have the results soon.
    ...

Later, Greg invited me to his 470-er for few nice tacks also.

    ***

On Sunday (Sep. 25, 2011) was light air and water annoyingly agitated by motorboats. I've made few hours circumnavigation around central part called "Patelnia"("Pan") of Zegrze Reservoir, met many sailboats, motorboats, paraglides, water jet scooters... and there is a video of it:
    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPkMVEaBWk4"]Around "Patelnia" ("Pan") Zegrze Reservoir Sep.25, 2011 - YouTube[/ame]

Almost 14 minutes and probably too boring, but I am a novice director

This is a story from Grzegorz (greg470) which he wrote there:

    Forum

On Saturday, I sailed Beth ...
I started on the water under the watchful eye of Robert (in the end he was not sure if saying goodbye to the boat for a moment or longer).
The start was successful - I took the inside half a bucket of water rather than the whole - the centreboard down and setting the tack (####! behind my back is an another sail - I have to control it), ballasting super simple - translates your weight from one knee to the other (stability lateral like kayak). It is the wind, you can sit on side deck - just what I like sailing - in the precarious balance between power and sail leaning my weight (gravitational and not limp), hull (its stability is irrelevant) is simply to go. And Beth is going, it can come into planing? - Unfortunately, turns on the brake - the centreboard. Robert needs some work of it - at higher speed, centreboard falls into such vibrations, that ends up riding. Maybe it could be smaller, have the possibility of a partial lifting? I feel that Beth could sail even without the centreboard, Robert needs to check out it. Approach me to the shore, at centreboard taken out a boat without any problem and without drift turned to the wind. Another thing that truly listens to the boat a little rudder, perhaps even to little (to short).
So, Robert has a great boat to play with the wind and water (the more wind the more it is impossible to avoid the water). Play near the shore, in his place without the assistance, I would sight of the shore did not take his.
The boat has another advantage - it is very sociable - just for a moment and just put out alongside a few friends.
    Congratulations Robert.

    greg
    Few words from me:
    1. Centreboard was not properly made by me, not correctly by plans, because it was made from few of pine timbers - pine is to soft for thin and smooth trailing edge.
    2. I'm really to impatient worker for really correctly finish of foils (centreboard and rudder's blade) that they are not smooth...
    3. Centreboard is a bit shattered after the second navigation season on shallows and it needs some work.

    Here you are

There are maps of his route and results:

Minimal angle close to the wind was circa 37-38 degree ("no navigation (death) angle"* is circa 75 degree) but speed was only 2-3.5 knots. If he sailed under angle to the wind 20 degree more speed increased to the 5-5.5 knots and was similar for reaching and running:

    table of speed**:

    Notes:
*) Sorry - I don't know how it is in English
**) Total time of sailing was circa 27 minutes because a Speed Puck was switched off ten minutes after beaching - that average speed was circa 4 knots!

And comment: Wind Force 3-4, first reef on mainsail taken, skipper circa 120 kg of weight, centreboard not properly finished that vibrating as a brake...

Below as an attachement is my hypotetical diagram of BETH's speed:

    Very interesting data and graphics.

How were those Speed Statistics generated/created? Guess I need to check out the GPSActionReplay site.

I don't know Greg's model of GPS Speed Puck - I will ask him for info. It's really useful for small boat sailors - waterproof etc. He uses it mounted on his 470-er's mast still if sailing.

Data registered by Speed Puck downloaded to the PC and elaborated by software from GpsActionReplay.com
Map is probably from internet (google?).

    And another thing:

Limit of (normal) displacement speed (not planing)* for BETH's hull is by this formula Vmax[kts]=1.34√LWL[ft] = 5.28 knots and it was achieved and exceeded up to circa 6 knots!

At present I have a special motivation for improve the smoothness of centreboard, rudder and bottom and for improve my own skills for planing under full sails!

Yesterday (Saturday Oct. 1, 2011) was wind full Force 3 and irregulary gusted Force 4. I have not photos of sailing - there is a rest in Marina SWOS in Zegrze Południowe:

The forecast for Sunday (Oct. 2, 2011) was rather poor and near 11A.M. seemed to be even worse, but the rigging proved that a wind is and the gray cloud layer evaporates. At noon it was already quite clear, blue sky. Force 1 blew, but perhaps in the gusts was sometimes Force 2, because the centreboard began to vibe at a speed of around 5 knots.

In Białobrzegi on Eastern shore I've met Janusz and his proa PJOA:

Moments later, Janusz sailed with several people in the direction of Serock, and I followed them. There are no miracles - PJOA full sail significantly faster than BETH, near the island Euzebia increasingly wind was dying, I wanted to leeward ahead smartly from cabin boat, whitch for a long time hid the rest of the wind. In the end I overtook him, but PJOA escaped, so counting the time needed to return, I started to come back and soon I was back in Białobrzegi, because on the the "Pan" (central part of Zegrze Reservoir) all the time something blew. But it turned out that also PJOA Serock not reached, only a moment later he turned in my footsteps, so once again we met:

Moments later, I already sailed in the direction of Zegrze Południowe, where I arrived after about an hour - a pleasant tacking.

It was probably the last sailing weekend of the season - the forecast is cold weather, and I have an appointment to transport the boat home.

Exactly ... Today officially the navigation season ended. The small boat was unrigged, loaded onto a roof rack:

Then she smoothly and safely transported to the garage (thanks to Wojtek!) Where it will be washed, dried and ready for hibernation.

Something has just ended, but it is the herald of preparation for the next season, which is to be a lot richer ...
