    Default Boat Naming Question

Everyone keeps asking me what I am going to name my boats. And as a newbie Boat Builder, I have put some thought into it. So, for my Kayak which is only going to be succesfully built because my dad is visiting and helping me, I want to name it "Thank You Dad". Does Vinyl lettering work for something like that or should I paint with a template or is this just a stupid thing to do for such a small craft?

    Thanks )

ps) Tonight I think I am going to post a pic of my Eureka with ever so slight of a twist to see if I am worrying too much and how to go about fixing this. All the grabbing one end and having my dad move the other end seems to accomplish just about nothing, so ... This will show up in my Eureka thread )

Vinyl applique works fine, as does hand lettering or using a template or my usual choice the green "fine line" tape from 3M.

This is one I did not long ago and a "knocked out" template (lousy image). Another way is to use your printer and arrange a font with the name you want. Print it out and use rubber cement or spray adhesive on the back. Stick it on to a piece of glass or Mylar then cut out the letters or back ground. Apply these to the boat and spray or paint around them. I use a material call Frisket

Which is a low tack masking film. It's very easy to cut and air brush artists use it, to mask things out. A light score with an Exacto knife and you peel out the unwanted portions. It leaves a clean, crisp edge and tolerates most paints. It's translucent too, so you can place artwork under it and trace the shapes you want masked off.

I am a firm believer that boats should have names, the names should have meaning to the skipper, and named boats should be properly introduced to King Neptune with great pomp and ceremony to include generous flowing of an age-appropriate beverage! Anything less is at your own risk!

    I'm with you Dave,

But no name is better than the wrong name. And the boat doesn't need to be named right away.

Every time I have rushed there have been big regrets.

Names are tricky things to get right and I’m with MIK, you can’t force a name for a boat, it has to come during the built or while you build a relationship with it. Ok the relationship bit sounds bit weak but I’m sure you know what I mean.

After building my GIS for the last 12 months (yes I know it shouldn’t take that long) I am finally pretty sure what she is going to be called, I like it and the eldest son likes it. The only problem is the Mother-in law won’t. Oh well J

I have used laser-cut vinyl graphics on a few boats now, ordered online and pretty cheap so would recommend that as an option.

What is speaking to me is that this has been a great project between me and my dad (and really the only thing like this I can remember).

I am thinking of a shorter version of what I did, in the spirit of this century, I am thinking "TY Dad" - I am a little worried from the comments saying make sure it is right that the name might be stupid. Any thoughts as to a style name that would be a tribute to the fact I built it with my dad?

"Thanks Dad" rolls of my tongue easily and is no where NEAR the silliest boat name out there (ask Google...). You could be more cryptic with "Legacy" or "Togetherness" but I think a straight up thanks is great. We're talking about a kayak, so you won't have to worry about pronunciation over radio to the Coast Guard during a distress call, or how the name will fare alongside your neighbors in the marina. Above all, you have to feel good with it. I think your boat has told you already...

    Hi Danielle
As a father myself I think you named the kayak beautifully in your earlier post when you said "What is speaking to me is that this has been a great project between me and my dad ...".

It's a bit of a tradition to name a boat after a wife, love or mother. In this case, I think your dad would be quite proud to have it named after him . . .

Also workboats are often named after men in the Americas. A nice tradition.
