For another 6 inches you could have the brightest star in the universe of small sailing dinghys--MIK's Goat Island Skiff.

Characteristics Length overall 14'-0" Beam 6'-0" Depth amidships 2'-6" Draft (board up) 8" Draft (board down) 3'-2" Weight (approx.) 325 lbs. Cockpit size 8'-9" x 4'-10" Average passengers 2-4 Sail area Main - 73 sq. ft.
Jib - 45 sq. ft.
Total - 118 sq. ft. Hull type: Vee bottom hard chine hull developed for 1/4" sheet plywood planking.
Sail type: Jibhead sloop-rig with centerboard.
Power: Short shaft outboard motor to 5 hp.
Trailer: Designed for use with Glen-L Series 1000 boat trailer plans.
Howdy, It is a general utility boat. If you are learning to sail it might be a good place to start, though I think you would learn better in something more responsive - like an OZ PDR (or the longer PDGoose) which are much simpler and lighter and easier.
If you are comfortable sailing in small boats already the goat will sail much better, but it is much more oriented towards being a sail boat.
With the Glen-L14 I would suggest making the seats out of ply and boxing them in as well as the area under the foredeck so you can recover from capsize. The one in the pics will be very difficult to bail out. The structure looks a bit old fashioned compared to Glen L's more modern designs, though i don't know if they have any stitch and glue sailboats.
The Goat is more likely to capsize than the Glen-L, but it is also set up to bail out and recover or float upside down with good buoyancy. The Glen L will do this if those seats are boxed in with ply and the area under the foredeck too.
Because of all the wires, ropes, pulleys and miscellaneous bits and the two sails that part of the boat will be much more expensive than any freestanding single sail rig.
Best wishes
Michael
