Default How to build Cardboard Model of Quick Canoe

    Hi Guys,

Just received my Quick Canoe plans and would like to make a cardboard model of it, Just wondering what is the best way to hold the cardboard together. I imaging tape would be easier than glue.

    Thanks
    Geoff.

I think the same I'm not very experienced in cardboards models. Most depends from your skills and how accurate model you need. If you need a cardboard model for see shape of your future boat - tape is really OK

My GIS model, about 22" long, was built to understand the construction process and to be a display model. So it is pretty detailed and built to last. I have used museum board, which is a heavy gauge paper found in art stores and chip board, which is the cardboard from the back of a note pad. The museum board was used for the plywood panels while the heavier chip board was used for the timbers. I laminated some pieces together to simulate some of the timber's thickness. Both glue very quickly with white glue (Elmer's Glue) and I used blue painter's tape to hold some of the pieces together while the glue dried. The foils are balsa wood and masts are from wooden dowels sanded to shape. The sail is some heavy plotting paper from the office.

In the 1st picture the model has been sprayed with white primer that I had in the garage. I have since painted the hull with latex paint to study color choices.

For quick study models clear tape is the fastest, but it tears the surface off the paper. If you want to step back and daydream about what you are going to build take the time to build it with heavy paper and glue. By taking your time with the model you will see how careful you will need to be to get a fine shaped boat.

    Enjoy you boat building.

John is our model builder extraordinaire, so take note of what he says! Tacking it together with a small hot melt glue gun (About $6 from a hardware/hobby store) would also be simple enough, and it sets fast.

    Thanks John,
That's great. I was only going to do a quick mock up to see how things went together but as I'm using a similar gunwale to the GIS I might as well give that a go as well.

Yes ... depends on what you want. I sometimes print the hull panels off on my computer printer using stiff card, cut out and have it taped together 4 minutes later.

With building of wood - if using balsa there are some nice cyanoacrylate glues formulated for balsa model making. Take about 5 seconds to glue bond.

You would have to tape the outside together first and then use on of the GAP FILLING cyanoacrylates applied to the inside of the boat to hold the seams together.

    Best wishes

    G'day Geoff
Depends on whether you want a display item or just see how the bits fit together.

If the latter, cornflake packet, temporary tape, & PVA glue is fine.
That's what I did with several of the designs in Payson's "Build the New
Instant Boats" some 15 years ago when I had no spare cash. Painted them
with whatever was in the shed, & later when I could afford some, applied a
soak-coat of pox. The Windsprint model is the only one I can find now. You
can see where the tape was torn off. Spars & sail were wooden skewers &
paper. "Gypsy" was a -much- better model but it seems to have disappeared...

If you want a display item, I'm not the person to listen to for advice...
    cheers
    AJ
