Midge,
Great video clips! They make me hungry to start on my PD Racer (I have the plans, but the Eureka has so far got in the way!!) What a tight little circle Mik has it turning around in!)
How did you get such good resolution on the You Tube clip? I presume that you have used "i-Movie" (by the music) What settings did you use?
I hope the day goes well at the "Eureka Launch"
regards
Walesey

Thanks Walesy!
Yep, iMovie 08 has a button which says "share over YouTube". It's an idiot's way of getting the settings right.
There's nothing flash about the camera though, it's my Canon Pro 1 point and shoot used in Movie mode. 2 mins max per clip.
Oh, you may be interested in my recent makeover of PDRacer.info, I've finally got all the pics clickable , and have a few new how-too's which are pretty much a summary of what's on this thread, but some might find them useful.
Cheers,
P

Thanks
Hi Midge,
I have started an Oz PD finished the foils, mast, boom and yard. I'm doing a lug rig. I will post some pics when I get a bit further along.
This is a first attempt at epoxy and such things and I want to thank you for the detail on the info site. Michael's plans are great but the additional pics and advice helps answer questions a novice might have and reduce the self doubt.
Two things I've learnt off the bat is 1. don't try and second guess the designer (follow the directions) and 2. epoxy is very forgiving.
Anyway great work.
Cheers Mike

Thanks Mike,
It's great to hear the site has been useful, I'm looking forward to seeing some pics too!
Michael or it may have been someone else was talking recently about organising a bit of a PDR event in Adelaide recently, it may pay to give him a hoy.
Cheers,

Yep, caught up with Mik down at Hindmarsh Island recently and he mentioned a get to know a PD day. It's been too bloody hot down here lately to do much of anything.
Mik if your watching, look forward to a play when it cools down.

Plans in the offing for a PDR in Bohol Philippines.
Hello All,
I'm new to the group but have been an admirer of the Bess and the GIS for some time. I have built 2 boats so far, a Featherwind and my own design, a canoe, which I named Aquila. At this time she's shrunk from a 16 foot decked sailing canoe to a 9 foot punt. (long story.)
I think my third build will be a PDR and I've been researching for some time. Now I found this forum, it gives me the opportunity to ask some questions.
With all this talk about the Mk-II is there a major difference between the hull of the original PDR and the new one or are the old offsets for the rocker still OK?
How will the instalation of shallow "bilge" keels affect performance and would that comply with the rules should I want to compete?
I was very impressed with some of the members modeling talent. It inspried me to make a small model of my intended project. Edna calls it a "Posporo" which is Tagalog for match or matchbox.
I like a balanced lug personally.
Mabuhay all,
Steve. aka Cybernaught.Onward through the fog.

G'day Steve, I think you might need a bit more epoxy on the nose of that one.
Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Howdy Cybernaught,
The only rocker that has been published for the OZ is for the Mk2. And there have been no changes from that.
Shallow bilge keels represent a big drop down in performance - you would probably halve it - they are very ineffective.
However if your sailing area is uniformly shallow and you don't have any deeper water to sail in ... then shallow keels make the difference between sailing or not sailing - so are OK in that situation.
The standard OZ with the centreboard half up would outperform bilge keels easily. And then on reaching deeper water you can still put the thing down. and walk away.
There is enough clearance under the sail to pull the centreboard a fair way up. I generally leave the rudder right down or near down so it hits the bottom first and tells me we are in the shallows. If only a shallow patch it will generally bounce down when deeper water is reached.

Got it.
Hi Mik,
Thanks for the quick response. I'm planning on getting your planset from Duckworks in the USA. Instant download PDF file. I'm assuming it's for the MK-II but does it include the details for the balanced lug rig? Maybe the MK-II is a beta test version from what I read???
I will probably never compete coz there are only a few PDRs getting built near Manila at present but I'd like to do it right and have the performance potential of the OZ version.
Here is the hull detail I was refering to before.
Aquilia has a daggerboard and I can walk her to the edge of the reef in 6" of water when I have to. (1/2Km) I live on the beach on Pangangan Island off the central west coast of Bohol. Love it!
Your rudder system is interesting too. I have used a weighted rudder that pivots on both previous boats and used a piece of string to pull it up and cleat it.
Thanks for setting up the forum and making yourself so available.

Howdy Cybernaught,
There was a plan Beta - but it included a somewhat optimised rocker a little bit different from the original you show. The rules give plus or minus hal an inch on all points.
I redrew the rocker for our Mk1 boats for which there was never a plan except on my computer.
When drawing up the Mk2 I changed it again -but that was the only set of plans released. So Mk2 shape was in the Beta and in the final plan.
I don't plan to change the rocker as it really is an intuitive job with no real basis on data. If someone does a PDR that is faster than the OZ then I will be out there with a tape measure and a straight edge.
the general principle was to reduce the curvature of the bottom as much as possible and still leave a small margin for cutting errors - CUT AND PLANE ACCURATELY PLEASE!!!
As far as the lug rig goes - I have a package with all the details and if people email me with a copy of their payment advice from one of my agents I'll send it to them free of charge.
