    Thanks MIK,
I hoped that was the case. I glued up the blank for the foils with red cedar and an oak trailing edge. I'll start shaping soon.
    Regards,
    Austin

Hi Mik, I have a RV question would two smaller boards, one each side work ok, as if the drag was the same this word make the tacks the same and make righting after a capsize super easy?

It is possible to do, but it does mean two trunks to build and two boards. Also the two boards can't be much shorter than a single. Also the two slots cause extra drag.

Apart from those general observations... No reason why Mik ot! )

    Wotcher.

Got myself some plans from Duckworks on the weekend, but I'm interested in the lug rig option. How do I get hold of the plans for that?

    Default OzRacer RV sail options

    Hi Everyone,

I recently bought the OzRacer RV plans fron Duckworks. Now I am trying to decide what sail I want to use. I have never done any sailing so this will be a boat for me (<70Kg) and my kids (10 and 12) to learn on.

Of course it has to be safe, easy, cheap, fun, etc.

We are in costal Florida, USA and will be sailing on the local brackish lagoon. I feel like there is usually wind, but not nearly like in Karratha, WA!

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Default Building the OZ PD Racer - now renamed the OzRacer

I don't have the RV plans, only the draft Mk3 plan supplement, so forgive me my references are incorrect.

One nice feature of the design is the multiple options for the rig. As novice sailors, I'd suggest starting with the smaller sprit sail and make it out of polytarp. It's inexpensive and gets you on the water quicker. After you've gotten hooked on sailing, you can move up the larger sails. The lug has proven quite popular here with plenty of opportunity to tweak, fiddle, and optimize if you're so inclined (to be determined). If the mast for the small sprit and the lug are the same, it makes that a natural progression. If you have to make a new mast anyway, then the larger sprit offers the advantage of being familiar and relatively simple to cut and sew from real sailcloth (Dacron). I hope all I've said actually applies to the RV...

    Howdy,

I'd recommend the lug sail because it can be reefed and because you can pick the brains of all the people here who have done a huge amount of work to get the lug performing really well.

This way - one sail can be used and can be set at different sizes depending on wind conditions and experience.

    Best wishes
    Michael.

Default Mast Internal Blocking (OzRacer RV)

I was going to glue the second wide face of the (sprit-rig) mast - closing the box, as it were - when I happened to look at the lug-rig supplement. It says the "only real change is that some of the spacer blocks are eliminated and the top spacer block is larger than the original 25.6mm one."

But the lug-rig mast's internal blocking is 1158mm, that is, almost twice the the sprit-rig mast's 625mm. Isn't this a "real change"? Or is the sprit-rig mast's 625mm a misprint? A non-designer like me is also confused by seeing that the lug-rig mast is considerably shorter than the sprit-rig one, but its internal blocking is considerably longer.

Possible reason for the difference: With the sprit you have the sail laced all along the mast whereas the lug's mast is pulled at the peak only (on one tack anyway). I don't really like that answer but it's too late, I said it. Also: The lug is a larger area overall than the sprit.

Great videos - quite a lot of wind!

I'm very excited about the OzRacers in Hungary. Such a great way to get people to use the lakes and rivers - and it is much less expensive than manufactured boats.

I have added the videos to my collection on youtube!

A problem (for me) from page 86, Rigging Notes, Traveller:"Single Block to suit mainsheet thickness (tie into a small loop in the middle of the traveller)".

It is the "middle of the traveller" that I don't understand. Isn't the block supposed to travel, that is, not to stay in the middle? If it stays in the middle, what is the "traveller" name for?
