Well, that was an interesting experience. Google translate creates a mock page which has the original language and the translation interleaved. The original language is simply hidden (by a CSS trick I guess) but reappears when you hover.

However when you paste the google translation you get interleaved sentences of French and English. Yahoo's Babelfish is better if you need to paste a translation.

The Google translation is much easier to read if you want to see.

Contest To sail light - Introduction

    Introduction

By conceiving his “Rob Roy”, John MacGregor invented in the middle of the XIX E century a singular form of nautical excursion, closest to the men and nature (to be discovered following pages). Hundred fifty years later, its ideas did not lose anything of their force, quite to the contrary, and we decided on the redynamiser while launching a new contest of plans.

The growing popularity of the kayak of sea illustrates perfectly the desire of part of the public to sail differently, while being freed from technical and logistic heavinesses of the conventional boats, with the profit of a light practice, treasurer in space and material resources. Contrary to the large units, the light and transportable boats on trailer can be launched since any hold, even small, without handling nor equipment complexes. The wintering is quite as simple and economic, in the content of the garden under a cover or in a garage. Construction does not require, lightness obliges, that a minimal quantity of materials and energy… But the program of navigation is not minimalist for as much! The basins of navigation do not miss, all along the coasts of France and Europe, without counting the interior water levels, wrongfully underestimated. The excursion with the long course is all the more sure today and comfortable that the yachtmen have from now on many autonomous equipment of assistance with navigation and safety, GPS, VHF, beacons satellite, etc the possibilities are thus considerable, that one is an amateur of sporting raid where speed precedes, or in love with discovered and strolls quiet for which the roads of cross-piece or the charms of the stopover are at least as important as the moments spent on water to draw on listenings, the paddles or the oars. In addition to the special attention which the hiker must obligatorily pay to the weather, the price to pay this found mobility is in an inevitably limited load capacity, which imposes in return a change of our practices of life: in 1865, MacGregor had made the turn of Europe with four kilos of luggage only! On the condition of studying its boat and its equipment carefully, modern technology makes it possible to still better do and with a comfort level much higher than to the XIX E century. Likely to interest very many people, the current architectural proposals answering the concepts evoked above however still rare, are diversified little and often misfit technically. In order to stimulate the creativity of each one, professional or simple amateur, we thus established the schedule of conditions of a boat-program which should give any freedom to create forms original and innovating, having to answer with relevance with the requirements of the light excursion and to give a new impulse to the principles of “sailing differently”.

I only have one concern about this - that the magazine doesn't appear to limit its rights to only publish in the magazine or promotional material, or protect the ownership of the designer. And in accepting the rules you accept their conditions.

Maybe there is a part of French Common Law that is well known so they don't need to mention but maybe not.

    From Google translate

It is also possible to present a half-shells, models, sketches, watercolor views, etc.
All the documents must be provided on paper. A digital version will also be appreciated.

Chasse-Maree and Wood Village Grand Pavois reserve the right to reproduce and publish the plans submitted to the contest and writing projects, each item submitted (plans, specifications, etc..) By a participant is recognized by it "Royalty free" for organizers.

The translation (Google) I read spercifically identified the sumbissions as "Royalty Free" to the organizers - which to me implies that they could sell plans without limit and at no payment to the designer. Not a good thing IMNSHO - but many amatuers will likely sibmit just for the recognition factor.

    Howdy Tom,

I am sure it is not the intention. It really means that if I enter I send them an email to check that they limit the use to publishing some items in the magazine. If they say that, then that becomes the legal terms for me - but not anybody else!

Is it possible the reference to free delivery is just that the plans are delivered free to the magazine for their use in the competition, that is not charged for them. Surely Francois Vivier would not be interested if it were otherwise and his new design could not earn it's keep.
It surely is just a translation problem.

Certainly hope it is not their intention. If you write them about entry it might not be a bad thing to relate to them the 'translation' problem as is surfaced here so that they will be aware of the possibility of negative interpretation and that it might limit entries (which would be a shame).

It certainly was interesting to see a contest specifically targeted to RAID boats.

I like the type of events where that race is more against the course and conditions that against the other entrants (as one-design becomes), there's usually more than one technical solution that works so it's a good trend to stimulate variations and alternative designs.

Francois Vivier has kindly posted an English translation on the HBBR forum

This is a free translation of the main items of the Chasse-Marée raid boat design competition :

To allow coastal raid, during 2 days or more, for a crew from 1 to 4 people (at designer option).
During the raid, handling ashore must be done by the crew itself, wihout exterior help or exterior equipement.
The boat is propelled only by the human force or the wind. It must be possible to shift from sail (wind propulsion) to oar (human power), or vice-versa, at sea, without need to come back to shore.
The boat must comply to EC rules, category D or C at designer option.
The crew must embark the safety equipement, as required by applicable rules (they have in mind French rules, but there is nothing special inot them).
Trailering with driving licence B only. Easy launching and recovering will be taken in account.
The judges will take in account performances both under sail and under oars.
Building material are free, but sustainable development will be taken in account.

There was a clarification in the latest Chasse-Marée magazine (issue 229, with a nice drakkar on its cover):

B driving license must be sufficient to allow towing (which means a regular car driver license. It was written before as A license, which would have meant a motorcycle license, so definitely a smaller boat !)

""Royalty Free" to the organizers" means that the organizers are able to use freely the contestants' documents for ans only for publishing the outcome results of the contest. No way that you transfer to them the right to publish, sell, build, etc your plans.

Don't worry, Chasse-Maree has a good reputation and has already launched several similar contests without pillaging the property of boat designers.

By the way, a Chasse-Marée is a type of traditional boat and cannot be faithfully translated by "fish-waggon"

    Hi Romainpek!

    Thanks for the note.

I know the magazine does nothing but promote great things for the types of boats we are interested in.

I know they have no bad intention.

But I will be cautious and send in an email if I decide to go ahead. Main thing is to avoid giving away all rights to a design - even by accident - as the magazine might change management or be bought by someone else with a less admirable attitude.

The translating of Chasse-Maree to "Fish Wagon" probably shows how legal statements are translated too!

Would be wonderful to have an English version of that magazine - I have seen it a few times - but then maybe I should have learned French!

Best wishes, and thanks for dropping by!
