Thumbs up It's always good to learn new skills !

    Hi Alex,

I'm glad that you are persevering with the rollers, if only for the sake of mastering a new skill, as I try to do as often as possible, a good example is that the last wooden boat that I started building is about 50 inches long !.

It will be, when complete, a 1:25 scale, scratch built R/C plywood model of a 1950's British 60 foot luxury motor yacht, that I haven't worked on for almost 10 years, and is still waiting to get finished !.

The hull and superstructure are built, but not yet painted, and there is still an enormous amount of detail to add before making it a working model.

My problem has been learning too many new skills, and I have been having difficulty deciding just what working features to give it, that have to be designed in, before going any further !, I will get back to it, after finishing my PDRacer, as I dislike not finishing what I start !.

In the intervening years I have got interested in making 3D interactive working model boats for 'Virtual Sailor' and the replacement, 'Vehicle Simulator', there is so much that can be done with this sort of thing now days !.

Using these sorts of simulators you can almost learn how to navigate, and sail most types of vessel, particularly sailing vessels, from the safety and comfort of your computer desk !, as the real world physics of wind, water and vessels, with fully interactive working instruments are almost as good as reality, and getting better all the time !.

Thumbs up Back at work on my PDRacer again !

    Hi Everyone,

Sorry I havn't been posting, or doing much of anything else lately either, but I feel the worst of my health problems may be behind me now, and hope to get stuck into finishing my PDRacer.

I have finally gotten around to brushing some more paint over the bits where the color was not quite solid.

It looks much better after a days drying, so I hope to sand it back lightly about Tuesday 7 september, before putting on anothret coat of red enamel to the hull ( last coat hopefully ).

    Good news David ...

Don't rush - just step by step as you are doing is great.

Thumbs up Latest photo of progress.

    Hi Everyone,

Here is the latest photo of my progress.
    Attachment 147512

This is the 4th, and hopefully final coat, It is not as smooth as I would like, but I think you would agree that it looks good ( at least in the photo ).

This was taken a metre away with no zoom ( my camera is a fairly basic 4 mega pixel digital ), so it is very similar to what a person would see from the same distance !.

If this turns out ok by the time it dries ( about a week before handling normally ), I will turn it over, and start sanding the interior and deck, which still need a final coat of resin.

Then I can finally get started on painting the interior, and deck !.

The good news is that my medication is working much better, so I should be able to progress more consistantly, and hopefully faster too ! ( I just need to avoid overdoing things, which usually sets me back, and requires the medication to be changed yet again !! ).

Thumbs up Health Problems Again !

    Hi Everyone,

Just when everything started looking up, all sorts of things have been going wrong over the last 3 weeks or so, which hasn't helped my depression either, that/s why I havn't been posting, and don't feel up to it generaly, let alone working on the boat, so I am just taking a break to rest, and sort things out, I hope to be back up to doing things in a month or so ( it may take longer ), but I have not given up, and wish you all the best !.

    Hi David,

That's too bad :(. I've been thinking that you've been rather quiet of late and hoping that it didn't mean what you said it does mean. Things aren't going exactly to plan here either.

Rest up and get well again :).

    Cheers,
    Alex.

    Howdy David,

One of the big things I've learned through the last 20 years of helping people build their own boats is that everyone has their own speed.

You will finish the boat in your own time - there is no reason to worry about too long.

It is obvious that you have got a huge amount out of the project and the roof rack project - great stuff!

So get back to it when you start feeling like it again. Lots of people take time out from their building and then get back to it after a spell. Also feel free to drop by here just to say hi when you want to too.

    Best wishes
    MIK.

Just a bit of an update to Davids PDRacer...

As David passed away last month, I was given the honour of having his pdracer..
All the bits and pieces, that the people sorting his gear out, thought was part of the boat, was given to me.. One member of the group comes from a fishing family back ground and as such, surprised me(50 years since being involved tho) by ensuring everything for completing the pdracer, was there..

I will most likely complete the pdracer, but at this stage it will become a fishing punt for a while as I have a pram to finish first, then to teach the boys how to sail(or is that belt it into them, like they do the joysticks of the dumb game machine)..
Anyway, Davids Puddle Duck won't be abused or written off..

Now 'Shrimp', for a boat name, David, David, David, Trust me to be superstitious, will have to keep that...Was going to name it the Gomm, in memory of David, but his name, his PD, so the "Shrimp" will live on and hopefully when I'm grey and old(oops been told I already am, damn) the kids will keep the PD and Pram going...

We'll see, the PD is better built than my Pram..

Was planning on building another boat, before, but now may just be content, got 3 now, one 17ft runabout/speed boat and 2 sailing boats..thats enough for one who lives 100 plus from water...

    Thanks for the update!

Very sad to hear about David's passing.

He was a nice contributor here when he was busy building. Most of us knew about his health issues too - and saw the valiant struggle he was making to keep going.

He contributed too ... making a plan for the timber loading device to get the PDR/Ozracer on the roofrack and putting the plan out for free. Quite a lot of work in a plan!

And welcome here too SouWester! Keep us informed of how you are going with your projects too!

    MIK
