Developing a WIKI for storerboat performance - lugs, sprits, foils &c
As we were discussing, there is huge amount of information on this forum that is a bit hard to get to.
I suggested the idea of collecting all the useful stuff in a WIKI that we can all contribute to by copying and pasting useful information from the forum.
I'd hoped to find a WIKI that was compatible with wordpress that I am using on the new part of my website. There isn't one at the moment but it sounds like one will not be too far away.
However I worked out an alternative using Google Docs.
This is how it looks on my website - WIKI for the setup of lug, sprit and other traditional sailing rigs for modern performance. Would be great to have reports how it looks on different peoples' computers.
Google Docs allows large numbers of people to collaborate on developing documents and the resulting document can be nicely placed on my website - actually it is pretty cool - you just edit and save on Google Docs and it magically appears on the website!
It also saves backups and provides security. When a proper WIKI becomes available I can transfer the information across.
The job at the moment is to copy posts from the forum into the document under appropriate headings. If it gets too complex we start splitting it up into different documents on different pages.
If anyone wants to help with this ... just drop me a PM or email and I will give you permission to play with the document. The only slight downside is that you have to sign up to Google if you have not already. You only need to sign up for googledocs and nothing else.
So if you are interested please PM me with your email address and I will add you to the editor's list.
Best wishes
Michael Storer

It will self destruct before I go to bed...
It's actually a long winded PM about other things that are not important, but there's the Wiki thing in there too...

Just was on the Googledocs wiki at the same time as BobWes doing some editing. It is pretty good fun as you can chat to each other and watch each others edits.
Things seem to happen by themselves and these little notes pop up in various sections "bob wessel is editing this"
I should get out more ... but it was fun!

We should also migrate the spar data from its current location. I can look after that when the time comes.

It was pretty cool to see your edits as you were making them, Mik. And the chat function is nice, too.
Bruce, I was looking for the spar data myself and couldn't find it. On the other hand, I didn't do an exhaustive search.Building Gardens of Fenwick, a Welsford Parthfinder

So I thought I'd wait a bit to provide feedback since I have no contributions to make, but would be the beneficiary of whatever collective wisdom gets assembled.
First, I was already registered with Google, so no issues there. I use a Mac at home and a PC at work so I've tried out both platforms (...sigh). My work computer's cookie settings were more restrictive, so it took a while for me to get the Google content to appear in the pseudo-Wiki window. At home, all I needed to do was sign in with Google in the Wiki window and I got the content.
I think the number of topics of interest are already greater than a single window-within-a-window can handle. I count nine major headings? And some of those are broken up, too? That's enough to call for an index of some sort (IMHO). It looks like the content will be rich, including tables and photos and who knows what else (YouTube videos?). Those clearly lend themselves to a larger format.
So from an outcome perspective (i.e. user requirement, or "voice of the customer"), I think embedding the Wiki as a window within the Storerboatsplans page is less than optimal. It gets the job done for now, and is a million times more useful than anything I've littered the 'net with. But StorerWiki v2.0 might want to break out into it's own space.
I'm not sure if I'm seeing content from an single source (MIK) or if I've viewed a collaboration from across the globe. If the latter is the case, then kudos; I can't tell and therein lies the beauty of a collaborative doc.
Keep it up MIK! Your boats use modern construction methods and they should be supported by modern collaborative tools as well. Cheers!

Also...
Consider whether or not the wiki is a repository (depository? whatever) or will it support a dialog. For example, I read the sail twist info and looked at the pictures, but I'm confused. So should the wiki be a place to ask my questions, or will this forum continue to be the... forum... for such discussion, with reference to the wiki. I'm not proposing one way or the other, just raising the question as a point to consider.Dave

Hi Bob, do you have data for your boom handy? From memory it was 6mm ply sides, WRC top and bottom. Exact dimensions and a deflection value for a weight with the boom between two sawhorses would be great. (I'm thinking of a similar ply sides timber top and bottom boom, so numbers for yours will help figure out what dimensions I want)
Edit: I found the overall dimensions and the deflection data, but not how thick the pieces of WRC top and bottom ended up.
Thanks, Ian

So you couldn't see the wiki page unless you were logged in with Google? I checked that the page would show without logging in and could see the wiki page fine.
So you couldn't? Can others confirm that they can see the WIKI page without logging into google?

Does everyone see the page properly - there should be a window with some pics and lots of text that you will have to scroll down to see.
