Default Drop-in sail rig and Outrigger build photos?

    Hi guys,

It's been a while since I've hit up the forums, last time would have been roughly two years ago when I built Freedom, a Eureka.

All the photos from peoples builds helped me a great deal!

I was curious if anyone out there who has made MIK's Drop-in sailing rig, and/or Outriggers has any day to day photos from their build?
I bought the plans from the guys down at Duck Flat, are there any alterations I need to know about to tailor it to the Eureka?

    ALSO

MIK I wanted to ask if you had any plans for a drop-in rudder system that I could attach to the Eureka. My biggest problem is how I use her. By this I mean, if I'm out paddling on my own I face her one direction which, due to how I positioned the seats, puts me further forward with more weight towards the front, giving me more control in the wind. If I have someone out with me I have her the other way to allow for leg room for the person in the front.
This is why I wanted to ask you if you had any drop-in designs.

    Back with determination,
    Mike

    Hi Milkey,
I have been thinking the same sort of thoughts as well.
I am wanting to build a Eureka, and am planning on doing a drop-in sail rig and outriggers at the same time. so end up calling it Sailing Eureka With Outriggers(SEWO). My thoughts was to plan it with the sail and outriggers in mind. I was also curious if anyone has got any photos of a SEWO? This is to help persuade the minister of finance.

    I like this combination becuase
    - I can still have a canoe if I want it.
    - I like the stability of outriggers for taking the kids/dog out paddling/fishing.
    - I can have a bit of fun with the sail. and or it can get me where I want to go quickly....
    - it is all car topable!

one of the things that I noticed on the drop-in sail rig page, was that the sail area is 17.6 sq ft. but if you read the outrigger webpage, it mentions that you would be able to use about 80sq ft on a canoe with outriggers. you might want to look into what is possible there.

    Greg.

    Hey Greg,

Finally some life in the thread!
I have seen photos of the outriggers on the Eureka, and the drop in sail on one as well, but have been unable to find one with both attached! But as MIK designed all three, they all mesh together nicely.

The Eureka is AWESOME, you can get some speed out of her paddling, ive managed to keep up with a tinny that was idoling along, might not be much, but i was happy

I think I have resigned my fate to having a permanent fixture regarding the rudder, but i still havn't got any ideas for it. Mind you i havn't done much looking as I'm restricted to using the computer at work, and should really be.. working...

I ended up building a frame to help me get the Eureka on the car by myself, While i can lift her to move her around, I couldnt get her up onto the racks without help. I'll find a photo of this for you soon.

I'm going to tackle this in steps and get the sailing rig built, then the outriggers at a later date. My dad will chuck a wobbly filling up the garage, especially as i dont live there anymore, and my unit doesnt have one of its own (Spewing!)

Yes but no. The drop-in rig goes together very simply and is fun to mess about with. Me, I'm stalled at getting a rudder sorted. It's half made but only half. Permanent stainless gudgeons will (eventually) live on one end of the canoe, sourced from Bias Boating Warehouse (I think).

I'm also stalled half-way through installing some larger buoyancy tanks in the ends. Mk-I floated okay when filled with water.. but the gun'ls were submerged... so less than optimal for bailing...

Did you have plans for the rudder?
Also any plans for a sail? The sailing rig came with sail dimentions, but i wouldn't know the first thing about making sails haha i need to research more lol

I'm in the process of moving my Eureka to a new location (where my dad can't throw it away) and once thats sorted ill be ordering the sailing rig gear and materials

    Mike,
my thoughts for attaching the rudder were the following....
    - incorporate a rope hole at the end of the canoe utilising a similar method to (https://www.woodworkforums.com/f169/n...tml#post746675)., BUT I would ensure that there was a BIG chunk of wood inside the canoe to give strength.
    - I would then use this hole to attach what I call a rudder holding rig(see picture) shaped out of wood. between the rig and the body of the canoe, I would put some form of cushioning rubber so that it doesn't damage the hull.
    - I would use a stainless steel bolt through the rig and through the rope hole.
    - This rig would fit to the contour of the hull so that it hopefully wouldn't move laterally or vertically.
    - I would then attach the rudder to the rig.

note... this is only my thoughts...
