Default Drop in sailing rig in the Eureka.

    Hi everyone and Mik.

I just starting to put together Mik's drop in rig for my Eureka, I read the other post about it and that fella has separated the leeboard and mast partner, the plans have them together on the same timber, which I prefer.

But, Im just wondering, where oh where do I place the mast step in the Eureka? ,ie whats the optimal position? 1 up and 2 up sailing?

    Thanks in advance.

    Nick,

Did I give you the special package of info about the drop in rig and the Eureka?

    Hi Nick and Mik,
I am interested in some thoughts on this question as well.

If a single partner is employed I was thinking it would be positioned about 400mm forward of the centre spreader.

Seeing the double partner idea has made me rethink the set up although they do make things rather crowded and a single partner would be simpler and easy to fit.

The CR of the leeboard seems wrong for a single partner set up but perhaps not terribly important with the size of the rig.

I am thinking of fitting a rudder set up similiar to Beth with endless rope steering. (I know I know it's a canoe) but with a rudder the CR may not be as critical perhaps.

    Thanks Mike

    Hi Mike.

I have been talking to MIK on email about this and basically you are not far off. He supplied me the supplement and that has the mast step 385 mm from the centre of the boat. I too prefer the single partner for space and simplicity...

Another outcome of our discussions is to increase the sail area. To do this I was going to extend the sail downwards by the same amount as one reef, 460mm, and also increase the mast length by 460, and maybe a bit more to accommodate the increased distance from step to partner in the eureka over a normal kayak setup. The diam of the mast is also too be increased by 3mm.

Also, MIK recommended if you are serious about the sailing, get the full out rigger setup going, with the larger sail yet again... But it is easy to convert to this at a later stage, as both options require very few mods to the actual canoe.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Nick,
The sail area is sufficient enough for me to get into trouble I think.

I'm just looking for a means to get home after my weary joints have seized up with arthritis.

Why don't you just hand the paddle to the passenger?

MIK, instead of increasing the mast diameter 3mm, could I just not round it off? IE, run a square mast with 5mm radius corners but still following the taper as per plan?

Sounds fine to me. In a sense it doesn't make a lot of difference as the thing that puts load on the mast is the stability of the boat.

However a canoe with two bods in is going to be more stable than a one person kayak. So square is a nice solution. radius the corners about 6 to 10mm.

I've found a rather fetching orange/yellow coloured tarp for the sail on the drop in rig.

A question to Mik can I apply the round measurements of the PDR lug or should I halve them as the sail is roughly half as big?

    Hi.

I spoke to Mik just before his US trip and he was going to draw up a sail to suit the Eureka for me, He was going to extend it a little in height, basically add an extra reef, and also sort out the amount of curve on the edges...

Mik do you remember or am I making up stories?

EDIT, On second thought, maybe just the standard size will do me too, I actually dont have a long enough timber for a mast much longer than 2.4m

    Cheers.

The spar won't bend much so need to be scaled down even a bit more than that.

did we talk about the possibility of increasing the mast length and thus the sail area without altering the boom and yard? (oops ... yes ... just above here)

Let me work out a figure for the sail offset along the yard.

It looks like about 40mm is about right. So get that about in the same place as the max convexity of the PDR sail and try to make the curve looks similar.

It aint rocket science, so don't be super fussy about it. All the other convexities, concavities can be in proportion to the edge length relative to the PDR rig.
