Would love to see the boats hit the water if possible - but if I am not here at the right time it will be great to see a joint launching on the net.
I will be going up to Sydney on the 9th December.
Will be coming back for a wedding on the 9th of Jan (and it could be an official boat launch too as could stay till the weekend).
After that I will be away for probably a month.

Hi Mik,
The 9th might be a bit soon for my launch (can't help being fussy) but still working on a UBSS perhaps incorporating a UTS around the 5th Dec.
If it all falls over have a great Christmas and we will do the launch in Jan.
Cheers
Mike

Getting there
I glued the gunwhales on Saturday afternoon went smoothly little mess good squeeze out and cleaned up Saturday night so minimum sanding needed.

Pleased with myself so here's another one

and the hard spot has blended a little. The only problem I have now is having glued the deck a little high I will need to figure out how to diguise the fact. I should have left the top edge of the deck spacer long as well to blend to the gunwhale. Hmmm practice makes perfect.

Started on the paddles doing a double and two singles nearly ready to glue the blades after rounding the handles. As you can see the shed is badly in need of a tidy, don't know what's happened to the cleaner.

Tonight I flipped it to do the seams some glass finish off the stems and apply some fairing filler here and there.

Good weekend for working wasn't it (I did housecleaning on sat and went to the Classic Adelaide Rally on sunday, but I did THINK about the boat ).
She's looking good mate. Wouldn't be a lot left to do would there?

Paddles
Paddles have been roughed out shaped, sanded and admired. Still need more sanding but there is only so much a bloke can stand in one session.

Laminated the first blade in a form. I decided because I'm using Paulownia for the double there is a risk the handle may break or bend from the tension. I will glass the double after the blades have been glued. The singles are Oregon so I think they will be fine to laminate in position.

Plugged the gunwhale screws, first time I've tried that actually quite easy. The stem has been filled and faired with high strength but because of sagging it needed a top up so I built it up with fairing filler this time. Then as I watched it slowly slump I figured a bit of packing tape to hold it all in place is what's needed, should have done it the first time.

Now I imagine you'll be sneaking out when all is quiet and dark, and no-one knows you've gone with that desk lamp under your arm...and you'll plug it in to cast the ugliest possible light from long, low angles to show up all the irregularities that have been giving you NIGHTMARES, and you won't mean to, but you'll just mix up another batch of bog to fill in either side of that hard spot that wasn't there yesterday (you are sure it wasn't)- and then you'll hear the call from inside 'Where the heck are you? I thought we were going to bed" and you'll say 'In a minute dear', but
The damage will already be done....
(but the boat will be OK)

Well I can report there will indeed be more fairing, not tonight though Josephine.
The bits I thought had plenty on have been scraped and sanded and guess what more low spots.
Good news though the blade came out of the form with very little spring back there is a bit of distortion across the face but I don't think it will worry my paddling.
I think the danger with fussing over little things is you get distracted, start wasting time or maybe it's a sign a major task is being put off probably both.

Good tip about using tape on sagging filler on the stem. I've got to put a second lot on to make it look sweet and was wondering what to do about that. Ta.

Um ... I think it is a natural psychological flow. Like when the alarm goes in the morning and you can't get up ... still can't get up ... nope ... still lying there.
Then suddenly your mind changes and you can get up easily.
Working on the boat is the same. If you can't deal with the psychology of the next step it is pretty easy to find something else to do.
But when you can deal with the psychology ... the next step is easy to move onto.
By the way ... that is how good plans work. That they make each next step psychologically possible. It is also how plans sales work - nobody will buy until the problems that prevent them from buying have been dealt with.
Best wishes
MIK

Mik your plans are good the trouble is the builder does not refer to them often enough.
This last session got the bottom glassed seams taped paddles glued up and the gunwales planed sanded and shaped.
Attachment 123659
The shaping of the bow and stern gunwales need a bit more but I'm happy with how they are coming along.
Attachment 123660
The stern is flattened off to allow for the rudder assembly, well actually it is because I miscalculated the length required, missed by that much so some compromise was required and the stern lost the toss.
Attachment 123661
Filled the inwale joints used a wood flour mix fom the ply it seems a little dark but is close the the gunwale cap. Which reminds me I must go out and finish the clean up.
