That is the original duck Flat type seat. The side isn't a gusset, it is a piece of the same framing timber that has been bevelled to match the side panel angle. Not sure if it is the best method.

I quilte like the one done by Peter in Melbourne with the string as a nice alternative. Look closely and you can see how he has used ply offcuts to prevent the frame from breaking under the load from the string. Simple cleats with notches glued to the sides of the boat.

Woah you picked a bad time weather wise to pop back into Adelaide.

I don't like back rests a lot. They tend to lock you in so that you don't make all those subtle adjustments as the canoe rolls around.

You capsize in an elegant and oh so english way.

Stiff upper lip and ramrod straight back, old bean. Shoulders back and try not to breath in too much water!

Right, there has been enough lollygagging this summer and as there is a gale blowing on our waters this weekend I thought it about time I turned my attention back to the Eureka.

So a reasonably productive weekend in the shed resulted.

Got the seat frame cut out and glued. I have decided on 6mm to weave some 3mm braided line topped with 4mm across the seat the theory being by recessing the weave a flush top will result. We will see and Mik there will be no back rests much less a stiff upper lip probably just the odd grimance.

Next the rudder arrangement was sorted and the blade shaped. I was going to make up a small box rudder as per the PDR but decided it would look a bit odd on the back of a canoe so have opted for a fixed set up. Just have to watch it in shallow water.

Then on to the foil which was whipped into shape in no time with the trusty belt sander.......mmm not exactly perfectly shaped according to Miks pattern but as I don't expect to break any speed records it will suffice. Actually it was amazing how easy it was to rough it out.

Lastly the mast support and base have been roughed out ready to glue the bracing.

I bet your shed was beginning to wonder what happened to you. You can't afford to neglect them you know, they start thinking that they can manage on their own, and pretty soon they have redbacks and brownsnakes as weekend guests and throw messy parties with possums, who happily evacuate their bowels in your boat.

We have to allot 12 demerit points for not posting for so long, and three sessions in the moaning chair- without a drink. (yes, yes, I'm doing the same penance).

Seats and foils look great Mike.

Whoa! 3 sessions in the moaning chair without drinks?!? That's stiff. I'll be minding my Ps and Qs to avoid a similar fate.

For a minute I thought you were referring to my seats as possum dunnies.....actually you could be forgiven for thinking that as now they are glued up the aperture for ones posterior does seem on the small side.

On moaning chairs as of tonight we have an empty nest, the youngest daughter having flown. I suspect this will take some adjustment for both the minister for finance and myself and I've run out of Rum.

So big changes Mike. Is she off to study or work or travel or all of it?

Arrived back in Adelaide yesterday afternoon!!!

We should get Daddles buzzing along so that we can have a launching party!

Also would like to get the PDRs to some club races. Brighton is happy to see us. And would be fun to go to the Port River too. I am going to see the Ducks soon to see the logistics of borrowing their PDRs under the new management.

Mik a race day at Brighton would be very cool, any news on the Duck boats. If you need a hand with transport give me a yell.

Back to the Eureka my son popped in the other weekend and we set about stringing the seats as it turned out it was a two man job and I have to say I'm happy with the outcome.

This week I coated and faired the hull, it still needs a bit of work but I hope to paint during the coming week. I have sanded the paddles ready for some varnish pretty chuffed on how the double has turned out.
