GIS bottom bevel bulkhead #1
Hi, Folks.
I've been quietly building a GIS here in Prescott, AZ USA. I've got all of the big parts cut and most of the bulkheads framed. Just bought some beautiful Doug Fir in 17 ft lengths this past weekend, so I should have something approximating a Goatish shape by the end of the week. I've been reading blogs and postings and I've learned quite a lot from all. I've just ran into a confounding bit that I need some help with.
Perhaps I'm being dense here but it seems that set up for the bottom bevel on Bulkhead 1 is off. I've got the framing overlapping the bottom of the ply by 2mm as spec'd. All of the framing bits are on the forward part of the ply. The side pieces seem to be angled correctly. Predictably, they narrow towards the bow as the side ply bends towards the stem. However, it seems that if I bevel the bottom according to how the framing overlap seems to indicate, I'll be beveling as if the bottom of the boat angles down from the bulkhead as it approaches the stem. I can see in other places, the chime logs for example, how overlapping the ply with the chine log makes the correct bevel. By overlapping, enough wood is provided past the bottom of the ply in order to allow the builder to bevel towards the ply. That's also the case with the transom. So, what's the deal with BH1??
I hope I've been clear enough!!
Thanks!
Dave

Yes, I think there is an error in the plans regarding which way the overlap and the bevel goes at that point. Set up the bulkhead in the correct orientation and do the bottom bevel so the bevel slopes up towards the bow.

Your intuition is correct DM. Bevel it the way you know it's supposed to be.

I had another look at my plans, I'm looking at Figure 5 of "GIS Assembly Drawings" document. I think the overlap and bevel are shown back to front for the bottom of frame 1.
I also think both the side and bottom bevels are shown back to front on the "REAR FACE" view of bulkhead 4 (bottom right corner of figure 5)
For bulkhead 4. the bottom bevel is shown sloping up in the direction of the cleat, but the cleat is on the front face of that bulkhead, so it should slope down as you go forward. The side bevels are shown sloping out in the direction of the cleats, but the side cleats are on the rear of bulkhead 4, and the sides are coming in towards the rear at that point.
Anyone with a plan set able to check and see if I am right or not? Apologies if I'm getting it back to front and adding to any confusion.

Thanks to both of you for the quick replies.
I had to plane the bottom of BH 1 back to level since it was already glued on.
Ian, I stared long and hard at the drawings for BH 4. The problem is the words "side bevel" and "bottom bevel" are transposed. The front and back views are correct. Or, I suppose we could look at it the other way around and move the drawings!

The designer will just have to sort it out I guess! Thanks for pinning the error down!!
